The next day Ikari followed Naoko to the Hearthome City gym. “The gym leader is called Fantina. She’ll use ghost type pokemon” said Naoko. “I can assume you’re here for a gym battle” said a woman dressed in a gown. “Yeah, I want to challenge the gym leader” said Ikari stepping forward. “Very well then. 3 on 3 battle” said Fantina taking her place on the battle field. Ikari called out Kayu and Fantina called out a Mismagius. “Mismagius use hypnosis” she commanded. “Kayu use rain dance!” said Ikari. Any effects that the hypnosis would have had were canceled out by the rain dance. “Great job! Now use water gun” said Ikari. Kayu scored a direct hit with water gun and then followed up with another water gun to knock Mismagius out. Fantina’s next pokemon was Gengar. “Okay Kayu let’s keep it up” said Ikari. Kayu sprayed water into the air to show its enthusiasm. “Don’t get to overconfident Ikari” said Naoko to herself. “Raichuu” said Silverstar watching the battle with forced interest. Kayu was knocked out with the first attack by Gengar. “You tried your best Kayu” said Ikari returning Kayu to his pokeball. “Okay, Jolt your up” said Ikari setting Jolt down on the ground and giving her a slight nudge onto the field. “Pichuu!” said Jolt all hyped up. “Jolt use agility and double team!” said Ikari. “Using two attacks at the same time is impossible. Clearly you’re a very naïve and clueless trainer” said Fantina. “I’m not your typical trainer!” Ikari yelled back grinning. Naoko got very interested at this transaction. The gym field suddenly was overtaken by copies of Jolt and all were using agility. “How’s that possible!?!” said Fantina. “Jolt use your zap cannon!” commanded Ikari. Gengar was hit dead on with the full force of a zap cannon. When the smoke cleared it showed Gengar knocked out. “That was perfect Jolt!” said Ikari hugging her pokemon. “I’ve never seen anything like that!” exclaimed Naoko. Silverstar nodded her head in agreement. Fantina’s last pokemon was Drifblim. “Jolt I want you to take a rest” said Ikari. “Okay Paytah, you’re up” said Ikari tossing the pokeball out onto the field. “WHAT!?!” yelled Naoko. “Paytah isn’t ready for a real gym battle yet” said Naoko to Silverstar. “Don’t worry Naoko. Have some faith in me and my pokemon, will ya!” said Ikari smiling. “Vullpixx!” called Paytah dodging an attack from Drifblim. “Okay, use flamethrower!” yelled Ikari. Paytah struggled to bring out the flamethrower. The attack did little damage to Drifblim. “Come on Paytah! I know you can do better than that” coached Ikari. Paytah then let out a pillar of flames and scored a direct hit on Drifblim. “That was awesome Paytah!” yelled Ikari. “Drifblim use ominous wind” said Fantina. Paytah was surrounded by a black mist and it began to close in on him. “Vull?!” said Paytah getting nervous. Ikari was trying to think of something to get Paytah out of this situation. “Paytah try using hidden power!” Ikari commanded. Paytah summoned up hidden power and fired off the attack without a hitch. The attack pierced through the dark mist and provided an escape route for Paytah. “Wow, she’s actually pulling this off” said Naoko to herself. “Okay Paytah, use flamethrower!” said Ikari. Paytah let off a fully charged flamethrower that engulfed Drifblim instantly. “Drifblim!!” yelled Fantina. The flames parted and it showed Drifblim burnt to a crisp. “The winner is the challenger Ikari!” announced the referee. “YES!” yelled Ikari jumping up and down. Paytah jumped up into Ikari’s arms and Jolt started to do her happy dance. “I’ve never seen a trainer battle with their pokemon in that way before. It shouldn’t even be possible for a pokemon to be able to do that” said Fantina walking over to Ikari. Fantina handed Ikari her 5th Sinnoh league badge and congratulated her on her amazing win.
“It’ll be best for you to fly over to Canalave City to save time” said Naoko once she and Ikari had reached the outskirts of Hearthome City. “I guess that’ll will be the best way to go” said Ikari quietly. “Look, you’re going to have to get over your fears sooner or later. This is part of being a trainer. If you let your fears get the best of you then your pokemon can’t rely on you” said Naoko as she left Ikari to go her own way. “I expect to see you at the Sinnoh championships in 2 months!” she called back as she left. Meanwhile at Canalave City, Ammy and Riley have just made it to the outskirts. “Where do you think we should start looking?” asked Ammy. “Orebourgh City, that’s where the first gym is. We’ll ask the gym leader if he’s seen her” replied Riley.
