I sighed, my first mission for Team Aqua. I knew it would be important, but I never really knew. And as I stood there, looking out over the ocean in back our great sunflower field, I wondered whether it was possible Team Aqua had some idea where my mother or father were.
Poochyena growled and looked down at him, sitting next to me, “Are you impatient?” I asked him, laughing when he seemed to glare up at me, baring his teeth. “Alright, come on, let’s go and get that pokemon!” I turned and ran through the field, the sunflowers more than a head taller than me. I could hear poochyena running after me, panting as the warm breeze whipped through the stems of the golden flowers. Poochyena howled and I staggered out of the field, my school uniform wrinkled and stained with the yellow mush I had made of the sunflowers. I looked over at poochyena and laughed, he was looking at me excitedly, his tail wagging and a sunflower in his mouth. He dropped it and ran inside the cottage, turning and barking at me from the entrance when I didn’t follow him.
When I entered the cottage I was surprised to find my friend from school there. He looked me over and sighed, then got up from the chair and walked over to stand next to me.
He was a whole head taller than me, with light brown hair that brushed his shoulders in choppy locks. A section of his hair was braided with a colorful bead and feather holding it together, the braid was longer than all the rest of his hair and reached past his shoulders. My friend also had intense blue eyes like the deepest, purest, sapphire. He looked at me from the side and sighed, “You really should clean up your uniform,” he ordered, placing a fair skinned finger on my head. He pushed down and showed me a flower petal stuck to his hand by some odd sticky stuff. “Go on now” he commanded, ushering me into the bathroom, “clean up so I can get you over to Littleroot, I got to get to school afterwards!”
I took my shower quickly and dressed, afterwards, in my usual traveling outfit; a Safe-Exit shirt that didn’t quite reach my belly button over a striped long sleeve shirt, black pleated skirt with my lucky safety pin, black thigh high tights, black boots, black fingerless gloves, my striped scarf, cat ears hat, and finally, my white messenger bag; which held all my tools, including my extra pokemon, Cleffa.
I scanned my bedroom for something I thought I was missing and noticed the necklace my mother had given me sitting on my dresser. I picked it up and stared at it; it was a clear quartz heart with a gold heart in the middle of the quartz stone, with silver shaped like three thorn stalks twining around the heart, with a small ruby embedded in each stalk. The whole thing was a little smaller than my fist and fit weightlessly around my neck. I looked at it again, sunlight reflected off the crystal quartz, dazzling the room in a spectacle of rainbow lights.
“You done, yet!?” Nick called from downstairs, “Hurry up, or I’ll be late!”
I raced downstairs and met him at his car outside of the house, poochyena jumped in as I slipped into the passenger seat, buckling my seat belt and shutting the car door. Nick got in the driver’s seat and started the car, not bothering with his seatbelt.

We drove in silence, the endlessly flowing road just a band between our off-map town and Littleroot. The road was an old dirt road and had plenty of bumps and rocks that jolted the car into sometimes where it felt like it was an earthquake.
I noticed, over our time in the car, that Nick kept glancing at me from the side, always with a look of worry on his face when he looked away.

“Bye!” we waved Nick off back down the road, our two hour ride only half over; we turned and stared at Prof. Birch’s building.

It was nighttime soon and the stars shown more dimly than ever, blocked out by the city lights.
As soon as the last light went out and the last car took off away from the building, poochyena and I moved in, stealthily moving across the driveway and up to the gates. It was odd, being up there, alone, but it seemed right to be doing my first mission.
Poochyena peered around a corner and nodded to me it was safe. This was our plan; poochyena acts like normal wild pokemon and looks around corners and all, then warns me about people and other things with growls and barks.
We got into the building without a hassle; it seemed the professor wasn’t so worried about having people steal his pokemon, “Bad move,” I mouthed, as I slipped into the laboratory where three pokeballs sat unguarded on a steel tabletop.
I ran up to it and bit my lower lip, “Which one should I pick?” I asked poochyena, looking around nervously.
Poochyena didn’t seem to mind the pressure and pawed at the far right one. I reached out to pick it up, but as soon as the tips of my fingers brushed it the pokeball opened and out popped a torchic. It looked around then spotted me and poochyena, the torchic cried out and I realized it was going to be a battle.

“Go! Poochyena!” I cried, poochyena jumped from the tabletop and growled at the torchic, his hackles raising and fluffing out so he looked twice as big, “Let’s get ready!”

    P: “tackle!”
    T: 30- 5= 25

    T: Scratch
    P 40-10= 30

    P: “bite!”
    T: 25-10=15

    T: scratch
    P: 30-10=20

    P: “bite!”
    T: 15-10=5

    T: scratch
    P: 20-10=10

    P: “bite! Finish it!”
    T: 5-10=0

“I won!?” This was the first battle I had ever won! I jumped with joy, but my victory was short lived, because we soon heard voices coming down the hall, “C’mon!” I cried, snatching torchic, stuck in a pokeball, and ran alongside poochyena, out the window and back to the rendezvous point where we’d meet Nick and go back to our little town.
