The Great Journey: Chronicles of Grunt
The story behind my character, and continuing short stories every few days or so.
Flashback: Grunt's Memory
The two were being quite loud one morning. They cracked jokes and exchanged stories about how much the world has changed, and different trends they heard going on the radio. Both of them never really understood life as it was, but knew that most of the things going on were definitely things to laugh about. From the man’s perspective, things could be better, but they were all fine and dandy with him. The girl’s thoughts were somewhat on the opposite side of view, as sometimes she got frustrated at what the world became, and what they are doing to try and “fix” it. The girl had seen it all, she was the same age as the man, but the man had woken up quite later than she did, and thought that the world just needed some polishing. They both sat on chairs overlooking the forest, and they both loved the view from the spiraling mountain of which they lived happily together on. The girl had made the man some soup, and it was as delicious as ever. They both sat there, having a wonderful time bonding with one another.
“You know, I never really thought I’d be able to live a life like this. I always thought it would be weird, not knowing anything about the world, when everyone around you is so loving and they know quite a lot, y’know?” The man said.
“Yes, I know! Fitting in isn’t very hard over here after all. The people here... the majority of them are quite nice.” The girl replied. “Majority? I think all of them are very kind.” The man said. “Well, you came from a different part of this world, and you haven’t experienced the things I have. Mostly because of the fact you woke up so late.” The girl pointed out.
“Well, yeah… but even so, don’t you think most of the people here have been nice to you?”
“It’s not a matter of whether they’ve been nice to me or not. A person could be nice to you or me for as long as they want, but it doesn’t make them a good person, because we know nothing about that person’s real life. I’d say most of the nice people in this world are really horrible…dark people within.” She said. The man looked at her with a confused face. “But, wouldn’t that mean that we are bad people too? Doesn’t that make everyone bad people if we make that assumption?” he said.
“I said the majority of people. I never said everyone. Never mind it though, just eat your soup.” She avoided conflict with the man for now, she didn’t want to ruin the wonderful time they were having. The man takes another spoonful of his soup and eats it, and then another thought comes across him. “Do you think there’s something out there that cares for all of us together? I mean look at all this.” He points at the beautiful view from the mount of which they sat, which had trees, forests, swamps, and waterfalls. “Of course I think someone made all of this. Not for us though, and certainly not for a purpose. Whoever did it, wanted to please them self, not us.”
“Why would they bother then? If they did all this for self-pleasure, don’t you think it would be somewhat of a waste of time?”
“I don’t know. Could have been anything going on in their mind at the moment they made this. Eat your soup. Finish it, c’mon.” She answered. The man yet again takes a spoonful and eats it, and then a final thought runs across his mind. “I remember the demon law. It stated to do wrong, and wrong only. Why would they do that, when another cleaner race sits before them, completely prosperous and healthy?” he asks.
“It’s their way of working. And it isn’t wrong, it’s necessary. All of it is, because when you look at it, why start a larger fuss if they have their own way of doing things the way they want to? When you look into it, Demons were never evil in the sense that they do what they do just because. They weren’t evil at all, because they just did what they could to make their race thrive forever.”
“You’re avoiding my question, though! Why would they choose evil over good?! If both are obviously doing fine, then why doesn’t one join the other, so they don’t have to live apart?!”
“Because they would rather not! Demons do what they do because being perfect is impossible, unless you do the right thing your entire life! They know that no one is perfect, and if someone was, they need to show what hardships they had to face because of imperfection-”
“So it’s revenge?! That’s what they want? They want to get even?!” he snapped.
“Just eat your soup!” the girl yelled back. Suddenly the man began to shake and change. His hands grew nasty claws, and his teeth sharpened into fangs. It had happened again. Noticing what was going on, the man looks down at his right hand, which started having some sort of black substance come over it. He quickly looks down at his soup, which also had the black substance within it. He stumbled backward, afraid.
“W-what did you put in that?! What is it?!” he yelled. The girl slowly walked beside him, then put a hand on his shoulder. She rested her head on his shoulder as well, then said, “…It’s okay. I know you don’t understand much right now. I can explain quite a lot… But I assure you, we can be happy…we can live together peacefully, and not worry about anything. Understand?” The man was calmed by this, and he sat back down. The girl sat there with him as well, placing the blackened hand covered in the black substance on his shoulder. It didn’t hurt him…it soothed him.
