"I fear the condition is getting worse in both subjects. If a cure is not developed soon, they could both meet a terrible end. This unknown disease seems to start with a lack of sleep, slowly becoming more and more deadly. The diseased ones soon find heat unbearable, needing to escape to a cold enviroment. One of the subjects recently told me that she thinks that something bigger is going on here, I believe she has lost some mental stability. She whispers to me every night, telling me that everyone wants to feel safe in the dark. Back to work I guess, but all this work is causing me to lose sleep."

"So Jenny I haven't seen you in a few weeks, how's it been?" Terry said to the woman he was talking to on the phone. Terry and Jenny had been friends most of their lives, but have drifted apart in recent years. Terry sometimes wished that they were as close as they used to be.

"You know everything is cool, just been having trouble sleeping becuase of all the work I've been doing recently" Jenny replied as she ate some corn flakes and milk.

"I heard about your beau." Terry said as he changed the subject.

"Yeah he's not feeling well, but he's alright." Jenny said as she looked over to her boyfriend Joe.

"I'm a doctor, you know there's something I can do." Terry said with concern in his voice.

"Thanks for offering but he'll be fine. Anyway, I've gotta go. Talk to you soon." Jenny said as she hung up before Terry could answer. After setting the phone down, she walked over to the couch Joe was laying on and said "Is there anything you need honey?"

"Please close the curtains, I feel safer in the the dark." Joe responded in a raspy voice.

As Terry was working at the hospital, he was approached by Joe, who said "Me and Jenny are sick."

Terry stopped what he was doing and said "Have you been up late nights?"

"I can't swallow and can't get to sleep." Joe said as he popped a cough drop into his mouth, he found it helped calm him.

"I see it in your eyes." Terry said as he shined a light in Joe's eyes.

"It's just that sickness has been getting to me." Joe responded as he sat in a nearby chair.

"Well, what about Jenny?" Terry asked as he took some notes.

"Can you help her? Can you make the time?" Joe quickly said with fear in his voice.

"I'll do all I can do." Terry said as he started to walk away.

"Just don't worry 'bout me, I'll be fine." Joe said as the doctor left him alone.

"My subjects escaped from me yesterday, they left a note saying something about going to Canada and they wouldn't be back for a few weeks. By that time the couple will most likely be dead. I think I too have the disease, I've been having trouble sleeping and have multiple other symtoms. There are voices in my head whispering, replacing my thoughts with unsettling feelings. These feelings make my heart throb in pain, could it already be too late?"

Terry rang the bell at Jenny's house twice and waited for a response. After a minute or two Joe came to the door, his skin was turning grey and it was peeling. "Avert your eyes from my skin Doctor, your here about Jenny. Remember?" Terry tried his best to avoid looking at Joe's skin as he was lead to Jenny's bedroom.

After leading Terry into the bedroom, Joe quickly retreated. When he was sure Joe was gone, Terry moved closer to Jenny and said "You take care of him, he's not looking good."

Jenny sat up and whispered "There's something bigger going on this time."

"The disease seems to be spreading faster in my blood stream, I fear I'll die faster than they do. It's really hot at the hospital, so I decided to follow them to Canada and hopefully crack this case."

Terry stopped the tape short when he got a call on his cell phone. On the other end was Joe, he was angry. "You said you'd help her Terry, but how you gonna help her now? She's dead!"

Terry replied "I could have found a cure if you two hadn't fled for Canada" as he drove down the road in the dark.

"Well you failed us and now your going to die, look out your driver's side window" Joe said as he hung up the phone. Terry slowly turned his head and to his surprise Joe was standing in a snow covered field next to the road, with Jenny's decapitated head in one hand. This surprise made Terry miss the fact that he had traveled into the wrong lane, when he turned his eyes back to the road he was heading straight for a semi.

Terry jerked out of the way just in time, but this action made him spin off into the snow covered field. The car flipped and crashed and spun out of control as Terry watched helplessly from the inside. Finally the car landed and Terry was able to pull himself out, but when he did he was attacked by Joe. A knife dug deep into Terry's leg, he screamed in pain as he pulled it out and stabbed Joe in the heart.

When the knife entered Joe's chest he had a momentary look of surprise on his face, before he dropped Jenny's head and collapsed. Terry was alone now in the middle of a frozen field somewhere in Canada, he knew he would never make it home. He limped across the snow as the sun rose in the distance.

Now that the sun was out, the whispers came back to Terry. "Everyone wants to feel safe in the dark." the voices whispered.

"What, no leave me alone their dead. MOVE ON!!!!" Terry screamed as he limped faster.

"Everyone wants to feel safe in the dark."

"NO!" Terry shouted now in a cross between running and limping.

"Forces unseen pulling strings in your heart."

Terry collapsed onto all fours as his chest started throbbing again, "no" he choked out.

"Everyone wants to feel safe in the dark."

Terry screamed up into the sky one last time, before he fell to the ground and died. Life continued normally for everyone else in the world, and no one else ever learned of or caught the disease. It's like it and everyone it affected just disappeared from history.

Jenny picked up her phone and called Terry, after three rings he answered. "Terry whatever you do, don't get involved with this illness. It's going to kill me and there's nothing anyone can do about it." Jenny said franticly as if someone or something was keeping track of her. Before Terry could respond she hung up, hoping he would stay away.

    The End?
