• Timmy was an average boy with a very wild imagination. He’d seen those coloured pictures of superheroes in his brother Jack’s stack of comics, a red and blue superhero who saved a woman from a car.

The colours caught Timmy’s eye first and the thoughts behind those lids swirled, he asked Jack what it was and he said it was a superhero, they helped people and saved the world and everyone loved them, and they had super powers.

Timmy suddenly had the urge to be a superhero, he didn’t think that he had a superpower though but when he asked his mother she said he was a clever boy with the biggest smile in the world.

Timmy didn’t think that that was much of a super power, but on careful thought he found that maybe a smile was important. If a superhero could have laser eyes then maybe his smile could do something, when he asked his mother she said his smile had to power to make people happy. It wasn’t a very impressive power, but he supposed it would do.

After Timmy had discovered his super power he decided he would need a costume. He pulled on a pair of his sister Molly’s dance leotard, and over that he wore his favourite ‘Spongbob Squarepants’ underwear like he had seen them do in Jack’s comics. They all wore plain underwear over their leotards, but he decided that maybe they just didn’t have any Spongebob underwear. He wore his favourite blue top, the one his mother had given him with “1 son” written on it. Then he borrowed their dog’s blanket and wore it over his shoulders as a cape. He ignored how it made him itch.

Timmy wandered the neighbourhood in search of crimes to solve and save people from, but no giant green monsters jumped out at him or any masked figures. He saw Mark Evans pushing a little girl in a sandbox but Timmy decided not to step in, Mark was much bigger then Timmy.

His friend Allie asked him what he was wearing and he informed her that he was a super hero, Allie asked if she could be a super hero too but Timmy informed her that girls couldn’t be super heroes, he did kindly offer to let Allie be his sidekick though.

Allie asked what she should wear and Timmy told her it didn’t matter much so long as she hurried, he had people to save. Allie swiped her mother’s apron and threw it over her head, back to front, then she took her mother’s colander and tossed that on her head, it was still wet. She marched back outside to Timmy and they set off again in search of those in need of saving.

They searched aimlessly for a while longer, as far as the big tree that had ‘E.A & B.M’ etched into it, it was as far as they were allowed to go, according to Timmy’s mother.

They stopped at the pedestrian street and asked the old Mrs. Mc Call if she needed help across the street, she scowled and asked them in a barking tone ‘how old do you think I am?”.

    Allie replied “A hundred ma’am”.

Mrs. Mc Call went red in the face and stormed off, her husband laughing at her. Allie asked Mr. McCall why he was married to such an old lady he said she wasn’t always so old. Mr. McCall didn’t need help across the street either, he ran after his wife.

They asked Mr. Sanders if he needed help sweeping his yard, he looked the children up and down and shook his head saying he wouldn’t want to get them dirty. As the children turned away he muttered that they weren’t even tall enough to hold the broom.

Allie asked if they should take a break and Timmy considered it, he said alright but he had to get at least two cookies, Allie hesitated but said ok and lead him into her house. Allie’s big brother Nick gave them some funny looks and then wisely asked “playing super heroes?”, he didn’t wait for their answer, nodding his head and saying “I remember those days”. The two children stared at each other in awe at Nick’s psychic abilities. “Nick’s lucky”, Timmy said with a firm nod “He’s got a much better super power then me”.

Allie and Timmy marched back outside, waving to Mr. Sanders, who waved back before wiping his brow with a greasy rag.

Allie asked what to do next and Timmy stared about himself, before spotting something stirring in the big tree, the one with the etching.

“Allie look”, he exclaimed, pointing up to the branches of the tree.

There sat Ms. Rosa’s black and white cat, Noir. MsRosa was the local librarian and Timmy was sure she’d be upset is Noir didn’t get back down in time for tea. Allie stared up, her hand shielding her eyes and said dubiously “This looks like a job for more then two Timmy”.

Timmy nodded and sent Allie off to call for James, their other friend. When they arrived back they were panting and anxious. James tutted at the sight of Noir up there and said in his queer accent “That sure is a mighty sight”.

Timmy promptly demoted Allie to second to James, she huffed before handing over her mother’s colander to James, scowling when he plopped it on his head askew.

It was easily decided that Timmy was to climb the tree, or decided at least by him. Allie stood under the tree and legged him up onto a lower branch, he steadied himself as the other two admired how the wind made his cape billow.

Timmy looked at Noir with one raised eyebrow, a trick he’d learnt from his mother, he’d catch him easily enough he supposed, but how’d he get him down?

He called down to Allie and James for their opinions, James tipped back the tip of the colander as he’d seen his father doing so before and said that he’d have to drop Noir and they’d catch him.

Allie called and told him, matter of factly, that cats always landed on their feet and he could just drop him. James shook his head and called “Nuhaw, that’s dogs”.

Timmy’s two sidekicks bickered among themselves and Timmy catching Noir around the middle and holding him over the edge of the branch hollered to them “Well, guess we’ll find out”. They watched in curious glee as the cat dropped, and Allie called out “Ha” when he did in fact land on his feet. Noir hissed before running off in the direction of Ms. Rosa’s home.

Timmy clambered down the tree and ‘high-fived’ his two sidekicks.

Allie yawned and Timmy decided it was time for tea and they’d save the world some more tomorrow.

Jack asked Timmy what he’d been doing and Timmy told him he’d soon see his own brother on his super hero comics.

Timmy’s mother agreed but said only if he lived after his sister saw all the tears in her leotards.
