• It was a bright and sunny October day, hardly the right type of day for what happened. The mourners wore all black and other than being cooked in their shirts the sun seemed to be mocking them, somehow. Well at least it kept unwanted guests out, at least.

“What’s wrong mommy?” the two siblings, Alphonse and Raine, said in unison.

“Why is daddy lying in the box?” Raine asked. Raine, only 4, she didn’t get what was happening, yet all the crying and emotional faces gave her the impression that whatever was going on, it wasn’t good.

“Daddy-” Selena wiped away some tears, “-daddy went to a better place, he’s happy now.”

“Can’t we go with him mommy?” Alphonse asked, he was quite smart for his age (6), but this time he just couldn’t realize what was happening.

“We will be with daddy forever, someday…” Selena said sadly.

“I miss daddy already” both twins thought.

A man walked up to Selena and offered her his deepest sympathies. She accepted it, but she still seemed to have an aura of sadness surrounding her.

“Mommy, I think something is wrong.”

    10 years later....

“Come on Alphonse,” Raine said hurriedly, “if you don’t stop looking at all the stuff you won’t get in by dawn!”

“Oh come on,” Alphonse said, “we have at least 5 hours ‘till dark, anyways, everyone else is out, why do I have to go so early?”

“Fine, but don’t get all worried when dark drops and you’re surrounded.”

    Alphonse scowled.

So Alphonse and Raine started walked home from the market and set off fairly early. You could only tell it was going to be night soon from the night chill that embraced the town. Even though night was dangerous, most people waited until sundown to go home or find the nearest shelter.

“So,” Raine said as they walked home, “home is…”

“Oh my,” Alphonse said in annoyance, “it’s that way!”

    “Oops,” Raine giggled, “my bad.”

“Geez, how would you survive without me?” Alphonse sighed.

Dark fell just as soon as they got home. The moon just started to peek out from the horizon. Shadows danced gracefully across the field leading home.

    “Al, run faster!” Raine shouted.

“What does it look like I’m doing, taking a jog!?” Alphonse shouted in reply, his face flushed.

They sprinted across the field towards their home, racing to beat the shadows, and along with it, the vampires. They could already start to hear the rhythmic clacking of jaws as the vampires began to emerge from… wherever vampires come from… It wasn’t proven that vampires would die from sunlight, but still possible. It was more likely that vampires emerged at night because there weren’t as much people around, which made the hunt easier if the victim was already in sight.

They finally reached the house door. Alphonse grabbed the key from his pocket, which was a round pendant with a dove engraved on the front. It was a birthday present from his dad, from when Alphonse was little. He shoved it into the lock and the telltale click resounded through the whole field, which was just about as bad as a foghorn sounding. More clacking of jaws…

“Great, just my luck. Always the kids, huh?” Alphonse grumbled.

Raine and Alphonse bursted into their home, gasping for air. Alphonse kicked the door close and locked it. They both sighed with relief. Raine took a deep breath of air and pushed a giant red button beside the door. With a huge BAM all of the windows and doors were covered with metal 3 inches thick from the outside. In short, they were safe, nothing could possibly get inside. Which was the problem…

Selena, their mom, was nowhere to be seen in the house, Raine and Alphonse were all alone. She was out in the open. There was no chance of her surviving the night.
