• The girl stood on the main street of town, all by herself in the blistering heat. Nobody knew who the brown-eyed, brown-haired girl was. She was dressed in a tie-dye shirt and jean shorts and ratty flip-flops and her face was free of emotion. She stood on the sidewalk, facing the street as cars whizzed by and people strolled by, staring at her quizzically. She noticed their stares and whispers but chose not to react to it. The girl finally crossed the street and dissapeared down an alleyway in between Carlos Pizza Parlor and Sarah's Ice Cream Emporium. Everyone figured they would never see her again but everyday she would walk down the streets by herself in the same tie-dye shirt, jean shorts, flip-flops, and the same messy brown hair and stone set face. Nobody asked her questions about the whereabouts of her family or if she even had a family. Nobody asked her where she lived or if she needed a place to live. They just chose to ignore her as she crossed thier paths. The girl had been sucking it up for a year or so, and it reflected in her eyes that she was lonley.

Claire Malone blocked the sun from her coal black eyes with one hand and let her other hand swing by her jean skirt and white lace leggings. She scowled as she felt a pebble through her sparkly black flats and kept walking. The sun beat down apon her blonde curly head as she passed Carlos Pizza Parlor. She was on her way to Sarah's Ice Cream Emporium to meet her best friend, Mackenzie Dean, for their favorite Italian Ices. She walked past the alleyway with the trash dumpsters and back doors of Carlos Pizza Parlor and Sarah's Ice Cream Emporium. She heard something move and Claire quickened her pace. She pushed open the glass door to Sarah's and the small gold bell above the door shaped like an ice cream cone jingled cheerfully. Sarah's was like a 1950's soda shop. It had a long diner style counter and red plush bar stools. It also had small red plush booths with Formica tables lining the walls.
    "Hey Claire!"
Sarah Collins, the owner of Sarah's Ice Cream Emporium, was waving frantically to her from behind the counter. She wore a red and white pinstriped collared shirt and a red hat with a pink ice cream on it. She was in her early 30's or late 20's but she acted like she was in her early teens.
"Hey Sarah! What's the scoop of the day?" Claire asked.
Claire knew Sarah took pride in carefully choosing the scoop of the day, so every time she came in, she asked that even though sometimes she could really care less.
"Mango and Papaya! Gotta love it during the summer! We do live in a tropical state after all!" Sarah exclaimed giddily, gesturing to the map of their small town of Crystal Lake, Florida.
Just then, Mackenzie came rushing out of the bathroom. Her glossy brown hair was pulled in a stylish, sleek sidy pony and a pink headband to match her pink sundress and flip-flops. Her brown eyes were full of excitement.
    "I've got major news!"
