• "And as we lie beneath the stars
We realize how small we are.
If they could love like you and me,
Imagine what the world could be."

If you're lucky, you will get one.
If you're really lucky, you will marry that one.

A high school sweetheart is often more than most brush off it as.
It is the essence of innocense.

There is a defining moment in every person's life -
In which the entire life, the entire person changes.
It is a moment when the heart takes a hit,
And the walls begin to build inside to protect the most vulnerable portion of the heart.
Often, this can be a traumatizing incident in one's life,
Such as abuse, abandonment, or rejection.

That defining moment which left my heart with a permanent scar -
Came from my high school sweetheart.

As I drove down the road,
I played with the dial on the radio.
    I found a familar sound,
    A song I knew.

    It hit me, then -
    What it was.
It was a song from us.
A song from our carefree nights.
    No, it wasn't "our song."
I knew better than to let that play,
But it was a song I constantly linked to us.

Daydreaming while driving may not have been the safest thing to do,
But I let myself slip in a flashback.

I sat in the passenger seat
Of your big, green pick-up truck.
The windows were all rolled down.
I loved the feeling of wind rushing through my hair.

    "Hey man, I, hey man, I -
    I am alive."

It played on your stereo so many time before,
But on this crisp, cool night,
The song meant more than it ever could or ever would.

You drove down the highway after church that night,
With a truckload of kids in the back.
You sang this song that defined us,
    Defined everything we stood for.

    You'd shown me a light I didn't know existed,
And it became our mission to bring others to the light as well.
    It was our gift -
It was what we did best as Christians,
And it was what we gave back to God.

We gave a truckload of kids a night -
Almost each one of them in need of saving.
    I recruited,
    And you drove.
    It was a system,
    And it worked for us.

It was the best feeling I'd ever known,
Serving God with someone I had become soul bound to.

We wanted to make things better,
    Not only for us,
    But for everyone around us.
Not only for those around us,
    But for the world.
We wanted to make it a better place.

"If everyone cared and nobody cried -
If everyone loved and nobody lied -
If everyone shared and swallowed their pride -
We'd see the day when nobody died."

We sang it so often on those carefree nights.
    We sang it with meaning.
    We sang from our hearts.

Then that defining moment came -
The day something went wrong inside of you.
Nothing was right anymore in your life.
You seemed to walk away from everyone you cared about,
Everything that meant anything to you.

    You tore my heart out.
You broke that trust that meant the most to me.
You left the scar and built the walls
That I don't know if anyone can penetrate.

You gave me that defining moment in my life,
    That defining moment of hurt.
As big as my heart is,
It will never trust the same again.

"If they could love like you and me,
Imagine what the world could be."
