• Over in the distance a soft scream rose to the sky. I darted towards the noise, there I hid behind an old willow tree. Then I saw a man, he had a brown handlebar mustach and a buzzcut, in his hand was a shoelace and a rusty old kitchen knife. Underneth him was a young girl, she had dirty blond hair, and bright green eyes you could see miles away. She looked like she was only 16 or so. The man raised the knife, she screamed again and and this time it was loud. Down went the knife. The lady stayed silent. I turned away. Then out of the corner of my eyes, she darted past me, the man followed. She was running toward Mr. Brooks house a lovly old man. Then I heard a shot. There I froze. I had just witnessed a mureder. Then I heard Mr. Brooks voice and a low voice. Mr. Brooks started talking.
    "Nice shot old Gus.
The man replied by "Thanks Steve, now help me get her into the truck."
The two men fumbled around in the back of the pickup truck, then lifted the body and set it in. I heard the engine as they drove away. I ran to the old path that my dad had mowed. That path brought me to my house. I grabbed for the doors knob. The door swung open. My mom was in the kitchen, bent over some dirty pots. I sat down at the oval table. My mom turned and saw sweat beat down my brow.
"Whats wrong sweetie?" My mom asked swipping her hand over my head.
“Nothing.” I replied in a low mumble.
She shrugged and turned back to the dishes. My father walked through the doors, coffee in one hand loaded shotgun in the other.
“I went to see if Mr. Brooks wanted to do some hunting but he wasnt home.” My dad said as he sat beside me. He was hunting for people though I thought. The old pickup truck drove up the stone road. Soon the door thumped open.
There was Mr. Brooks and that man. My dad hopped up.
“ I went to your house, we were schedueld to do some hunting.” My dad exclaimed motianing to the open seats. They sat down.
“I know I forgot, I went to pick up my old collage buddie, Gus Armstrand.” Mr. Brooks said.
“Hey im Gus, you guys were gonna go hunting i can go if you want me to.” He said
“ No no you can stay and hunt.” My dad said grabbing the gun he layed by the door and walked out, the men followed.
Mr. Brooks stared at me as he walked out. The engine started up and a strong gush of smoke came from the muffler. I went up the old rickidy staircase.
“Kelsey, you need to stay down here and help your mother cook dinner.” I trudged back down. I kept thinking about what I saw earlier today.
There I chopped the broccolie, shaved the patatoes, washed off the carrots and turned the coals. Dad came home when we started to eat. My mom got up and placed the gutted rabbit on the stove. The rest of the dinner was silent. When I was done i climbed back up the stairs and went into the bathroom. I looked at myself in the mirror I looked nothing like the girl. I had long black silkey hair, and blue eyes. I wore nothing but blue jeans and baggy T-shirts. I didnt were dresses like the girl, we were the same age though both 16.
I opened the door and left the bathroom. I walked to my room and sat on the old wool cot. By my feet lay Shakes, my wolf/huskie mix. I patted the bed and he jumped up. There I layed my head on the pillow and streached out. I fell alsleep. I awoke to the sound of a car horn and Shakes barking. I peered out the window and spotted a yellow punch buggie. My dad got into the car. I jumped out of the bed and banged open the door. I ran downstairs and opened the front door.
"Dad," I yelled as the punch buggie drove off. "DAD no dad NO!" I started to run down the road. As the punch buggie drove off I started back up the road and went inside. There, tucked in her pajamas was my mom, her face planted in her hands as she sobbed. I went and sat on the chair next to her. Holding on to her I shoved my face into her sleeve and wheeped.
"Who was driving the car?" I asked as she looked at me.
"It was the sheriff Joe, he needed to talk to him downtown i guess they found this girl dead in the creek and shot in the back, they think dad might have down it." she sighed as she got up and turned on the television. The black and white channels made me feel dizzy.
I leaped out of my seat and opened the door, on my heels was Shakes, I thought if I went downtown I could tell the sheriff I saw who did it. I walked down the bumpy road as I passed Ms. Wheats house and her little shi-tzu yapped through the screened in porch. Shakes looked at me as I walked pasted the 'Welcome To Rattlewood' sign as the cars past. I walked through the town, intil i came up to the station. Shakes followed me in. The receptionist said "hes busy right now."She pointed to the seat. I sat down. The sheriff came out and Iasked for my dad, he said "He is at your house, I dropped him back off."
"Well I need to tell you that the girl who you found in the creek I saw who killed her, his name is Mr. Brooks and Gus Armstrand." I explained as he rubbed his goatee.
"Old Gus na he couldnt hurt a fly, and Mr. Brooks would never hurt anyone," He said " That was a long walk you want a ride home." I nodded my head. I stepped into the punch buggie and patted the seat so Shakes would hop in with me. We arrived at the house as dad came and greeted me. I didnt tell him why I went there, I kept to myself.
