    Chapter one: A fresh start

    Angelina P.O.V

It was a new day, a new town, a new school. New people. None of the past, I could completely start again. I put my iPod in as I started the long walk to my school, I only knew one other person there. That was my child hood friend, Bianca. It was funny, she moved almost 5 years ago, we’d kept in touch but never met up. It was ironic that I’d moved to the same place as her. I was nervous. What would she look like? Would she be the same person?

I took a deep breath outside the gates of Chase Lane High school. The beige building and its immaculate plants, trees, and the cleanliness of its parking lot, was frightening. In my old school they’d been graffiti, rubbish, cigarette butts everywhere. It looked deserted. I checked my watch. Where was everyone? School started in 15 minutes.

I squinted my eyes looking for at least one person, School did start today right? I saw a puff of smoke coming out from behind one of the port cabins. I hurried towards it that had to be someone smoking; maybe they could tell me where everyone was. I briskly walked towards the group of four boys. My purple folder in hand, a friendly smile on my face.

I saw one of them say something, and the three that had their back to me turned around to stare. They didn’t say anything, they just stood and stared. I slowed down as I approached them, warily looking between them. I stopped right in front of the one in the middle, my heart was beating wildly. He raised his eyebrow at me waiting for me to speak. I cleared my throat.

“Uh... hi, I’m new here and I was...um...I was wondering if you could tell me where-“ I stopped I was about to say where everyone was but there was a roaring sound behind me.

I turned and saw the rest of the school pouring in like it was a parade. Their cars blaring music, the girls had their miniskirts on and were sitting on the back of the jeeps. Showing of their tanned, toned legs. The black jeep in front was carting along a banner with it. The school symbol I recognized it as. A blue and gold parrot.

The group of boys all disappeared to join in with the commotion. All except the one in front of me. I turned back to him and saw him watching me. He was beautiful. Not even, beautiful was a watered down word when it came to describing him. He had the cutest beauty spot on the right side of his top lip. His dark brown hair was so thick and wavy; it resembled a chocolate river.

He had mesmerizing blue eyes, they were almost violet. As I stared at him, he stared at me analyzing my face. He lent towards me, our noses inches apart. My gaze was fixated on his lips. Who was this stranger? Why was I flapping around him like a ditsy blond? And why hadn’t I moved away from him yet? He was invading my personal bubble. But I didn’t mind.

Move Angelina, take control don’t let him compel you. I blinked trying to wake my body up. Why weren’t my feet moving? He still hadn’t said anything, he just watched my face. My lips parted, and I saw him grin. He leaned even further in, putting his mouth on my ear. I could feel his hot breath on my neck. I closed my eyes.

    “Zaine” he whispered.

I waited a few seconds, and then I opened my eyes. I looked around and he was gone. I turned back to the crowd to see if I could spot him. I couldn’t see any of the four boys. Had I made them up? I shook my head. Not again Angelina, not again, wake up. A light shiver went through me. I walked towards the crowd maybe I could find the office by myself.

I put my hand on my neck where his breath had been, where Zaine’s breath had been. I smiled for some reason I felt blessed to know his name. But then again I had a feeling all the girls did.

The woman in reception was a b***h. Understatement of the century. She ignored me for 5 whole minutes while I clearly stood in front of her. I even cleared my throat and she had the cheek to pretend I wasn’t there.

“Excuse me” I said right in her face.

She looked up her face pissed off. Oh please, you don’t frighten me.

“What do you want?” She asked her old voice raspy and breathless.

“I’m new here, I would like my timetable please, and maybe a map if that wouldn’t be too much to ask” I smiled, politeness was the key, soon enough I’d have her wrapped around my finger.

Her face softened immediately, and she smiled “Of course darling, what’s your name?”

    “Angelina Sheerwood”

She ruffled around her desk for a bit before handing me a pink piece of paper and a white booklet. She got up and went to the filing cabinet and pulled out a blue piece of paper, and a homework diary. I raised my eyebrows. This was a bit much.

“The pink one is your map, the blue one is your timetable, the diary is for you to right your homework in, and the white one is your report to be handed to every teacher to sign”

“Report?” I asked confused. How could I be on report already I’ve only been at this school for five minutes.

“Well seeing what happened in your old school the principal thought it was appropriate for you to be on report...” Her voice faltered off when she saw the haunted expression on my face “Are you okay?”

I took a deep breath “I’m fine, I just don’t like thinking about it”

“That’s understandable...I’ll walk you to your first lesson”

I looked at the timetable . French with Mrs Kingsley, Comment faire plaisir, pas! (How fun, not!) As we approached the classroom I slowed down. I hoped this Mrs Kingsley woman didn’t make me introduce myself. The receptionist, I never got her name, opened the door and ushered me in. I averted my gaze from the class and went straight up to the teacher.

“Hi, I’m Angelina, I’m new here...umm here’s my report please will you sign it”

She raised her eyebrows at me. She took the report, as if she wanted to check I was being serious.

“Le rapport déjà Angelina? Comment venir?” (On report already Angelina? How come?)

I laughed, “Umm it’s a long story maybe some other time”

“Okay, some other time, take a seat at the back, next to Mr. Lockhorn, he is lacking a partner”

I turned around, who was ‘Mr Lockhorn’?

“Zaine levez la main s'il vous plait, si Angelina sait qui vous êtes” (Zaine raise your hand please, so Angelina knows who you are)

The boy from this morning raised his hand and smiled cheekily at me. I couldn’t help it my mouth just automatically raised into an answering smile. As I walked to my seat I could feel myself getting looks. Screw them. I dragged out the chair. The action sounded so loud in the silence that had fallen over the class.

I sat down and Zaine turned his head to me. He raised an eyebrow at me, I smiled flirtatiously. He smirked before turning back to Mrs Kingsley. I looked down into my lap, a small smile playing on my lips. The work was easy; I’d been in advanced French last year so I breezed through the exercises. Zaine didn’t speak to me again all lesson, even though we made eye contact and shared several smiles.

The bell went and I pulled out my map and timetable with a sigh. The bright pink paper was so embarrassing it was obvious I was a new student. I was trying to locate my business class when the timetable was snatched out my hands from behind. I spun around ready to fight for my timetable

It was Zaine and his three buddies.

“Oh hey guys” I said my voice sounded meek and small.

They towered over me. The top of my head only came to their shoulders, at most. What were they trying to do box me in? I wasn’t frightened, yet.

Zaine was staring intently at my timetable; I saw his face screw up in frustration. His buddies noticed and they all took turns looking at my timetable. I saw the one with black hair raise his eyebrows, the other one with the hat on just smirked. He pulled his cap down further to hide his face.

“How the f*ck, could she get the exact timetable as Mason?” Zaine said furiously.

“Dunno man that’s scary. What are you gonna do?” The one with black hair asked.

“Dunno, but she’ll be in all my lessons” Zaine said his voice strained.

I just stood there, unacknowledged, completely forgotten. They had formed a triangle and had left me out. I would have just walked away but they had my timetable, and that receptionist woman wouldn’t be happy if I went in to ask for a new one. I elbowed my way into the middle.

    “Who’s Mason?” I asked.

Four pairs of eyes flashed down to my face surprised. Whoa they’d totally forgotten I was there. I went to grab my timetable out of Zaine’s hand but he just held it out of my reach.

    “No-one” He muttered.

“Come on man, let’s go” The one with the cap said, they started to roll out taking my timetable with them.

“GUYS!” I called but they ignored me and carried on walking down the corridor. “GUYS MY TIMETABLE”. Nothing. Okay if you wanna play that way.

I sped walked up to them so I was right behind them. I stuck my foot between Zaine’s legs. He tripped and went crashing down, bringing the one with the black hair down with him. He looked up at me from the floor bewildered. I stood over him and snatched my timetable from his hands.

“Be careful bad boy” I whispered seductively, winking at him. I turned around and walked away, purposely swaying my hips. I could feel all four gazes burning a hole in my back. I smiled victoriously, I don’t think Zaine will be ignoring me for now. And I found out he had the same timetable as me without even trying.

LUNCH. It was horrible; I got my food and sat at a semi empty table. I hadn’t even made one friend so far and the day was nearly up. I sighed and dug into the thing they called lasagna. I hadn’t spotted Bianca yet. She hadn’t been in any of my lessons. I pulled out my latest book ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and read while I ate. I figured that I didn’t look so lonely that way.

    “Boo”

I jumped, I spun around Zaine was standing behind me laughing. I scowled at him before turning back to my food. He pulled up the chair next to me. I felt my cheeks heat up for some unknown reason.

“You actually gonna eat that crap?” he asked gesturing to the pile of ‘food’ in front of me.

I shrugged my shoulders “You got anything better?”

He smirked, he pulled open his rucksack and showed me about 2 chocolate bars, a couple chicken sandwiches’ and a liter bottle of Dr Pepper, an apple.

“Whoa, you’re going to eat all that for lunch?”

He shrugged “I’m a big guy I gotta eat”

I looked hungrily at the chicken sandwiches’. I looked up to him and batted my eyelashes. He leaned back warily. He looked between me and the sandwich then back at the sandwich.

“Fine, you can eat it” He gave in.

“Yay!” I clapped, the sandwich was delicious. “Wow who made these your mum?”

“Me actually” He said looking down embarrassed.

“Dude, you gotta make me one every day, these are amazing” I said grinning.

He flashed me a grin. A shadow fell over us. I looked up to see his trio.

“Guys this is Angelina, Angelina this is Matthew, Henry and Josh” Zaine introduced us.

I smiled sheepishly at them. They joined us at the table. Each pulling out massive sandwiches of their own. I grinned for all the bad boy front they were quite cute. Maybe I had made a friend. I caught Zaine staring at me, I smiled at him. I could feel someone staring at me. I turned in my seat and saw a blond girl standing in the middle of the cafeteria grinning at me.

I knew that face. I got out my seat and ran towards her. She pulled me into a bear hug, we broke apart and jumped up and down like little girls.

“Omg Bianca, you’ve changed so much”

“Oh you to Lina, you look so beautiful”

    I blushed, no I didn’t.

    “Lina?”

I turned towards Zaine “Yeah that’s my nickname”

“Nah, I’m going to call you Angel”
