• Epilogue

The world is in chaos, once great cities are now burnt and overrun with The Plague. People now live in what are essentially pits in the ground, hiding from The Plague, scared of death. Some people are brave enough to leave and search around the pit, trying to collect samples of The Plague, hoping to somehow create a cure. But, many people are skeptical of the efforts of the men. They think that there is no cure and that we should just live with it. And I happen to be skeptical of the scientists that leave to the surface for the sample collecting.

And the scientists may never find a cure, for the survivors all split into groups around the world. Most ‘clans’ (as I like to call them) are openly hostile to outsiders, firing on, and destroying them when approached. For this reason, the scientists need escorts to protect them, and I help to fill the role of an escort team. I only do it for the excitement and thrill of getting chased down and killed by others. It is a really fun and differentiating job, and I love it.

By now, you are probably wondering my name. My name is Alexander “Death Rainer” Anderson. And now that the back story is cleared, my story can begin.

    Chapter1:
    August 30, 2037 8 A.M.

I sat in my cot, staring at my shaking hands, wanting to calm them down, but for some reason, I couldn’t do it. Last night, I had been with the scientists, when we were ambushed. Of course, I never get injured, but a scientist was killed by the clansmen. It had been the first time that someone died on my protection, and it was nerve wrecking for me to experience it. I guess that it signaled my downward fall as a protector, showing that I let someone die. People began to doubt me and my security, and I felt at fault.

Slowly, my pulse rate came to normal, and my shakiness went away. I swung my legs over the cot and dropped to the floor, rubbing my face wearily, trying to forget the pat day’s events. Finally regaining some of my senses after being asleep, I saw the showers, and made the decision to take a shower today. Most days, I didn’t take a shower, trying to conserve the energy cells used to power the machines that purify the water. I knew first hand how hard it was to find the energy cells and exactly how much to power the machines. Today though, was a special day for me. The reason why, is because today is my birthday, and I felt to look a bit better than usual.

I walked into the showers and quickly stripped my clothes off, not wanting to be seen in a vulnerable state, and dashed into a shower, turning it on. Taking the generic soap, I washed and cleansed myself of the dirt that accumulated on me. Although I never have checked, people say I am 6’4” and 370 pounds (90 percent of which is muscle… at least to the others anyways). I tend to agree with them, finding that I am big, but I hate to use my frame to intimidate others unless it can’t be helped.

As soon as I washed myself, I turned the shower off and stood in the stall, looking straight ahead, thinking about the future. Finding I am just being negative, I wrapped myself in a towel and went to the locker I had earned from helping against invaders. Opening the locker, I quickly changed into fresh clothes and went out of the room, looking around the old train station that is now inhabited by our clan of survivors. The tiles were cracking and possibly had mildew underneath, the columns cracking, and the metal door to the outside was rusting badly from the constant assault of acid rain and other natural occurrences. It was then that I realized that we had been like this for over a year. Sighing, I walked to my cot and took my rifle I kept in a safe on the floor next to it.

I had found the safe a month or two ago in a raid on an enemy’s ‘base’ and took it with me to keep my things in. Once I had my rifle, I took the gas mask that was inside the safe also and strapped it to my face. And when done doing so, I hooked the oxygen tank to the mask and strapped it to my back. All of the oxygen tanks that my clansmen and I wear are fitted with steel plating that I myself made. The steel plating allows the oxygen tanks to take a beating without exploding or being damaged.

The gas masks and oxygen are needed for traveling on the outside world since The Plague is infected through contaminated air, and the only place making fresh air is my clan’s ‘stronghold.’ Luckily for the others, my leader sends fresh air in return for supplies the other tribes give, no matter how much they are hated.

After getting everything situated, I opened the door leading to the outside after putting the airlock in place. And I left as soon as I was able to, walking to nowhere really. My master knows me too much and doesn’t worry about me leaving. He always knew I would come back sooner or later. Taking a quick survey of my surroundings, I figured it was about 9:20 in the morning. I looked onward and walked forward, lugging my rifle and scanning around.
