    Chapter 1

Ever feel like someone is watching you? Well it’s true. Someone is always watching you. Every time you look in a mirror, someone else looks back. Your second self.

My hands gripped my knees, but only for a second. If I wasted any more time on taking a quick breather, my raspy breathing wouldn’t be the only sound I heard.
My head spun around. So far, they hadn’t found me. Yet. But either way, I didn’t think it was a very great idea to be standing in the middle of a darker than dark alley at 1:00 in the morning.
I bet your wondering who “they” is, but to tell you the truth, I’m not really sure either. All I know is that whenever I don’t expect it, they show up and start hunting me down.
They started showing up right after I got this weird ring, with a triangle in the center and three little symbols I can barely make out. Possible connection? No duh. I got the ring from my grandpa for my thirteenth b’day. Once I had put it on, BAM! the next day they started showing up. So ever since then, every time I don’t expect them to show up, they do. Go figure.
Part of the problem is that I’ve never even seen “they.” Never. Not once. Then how do I know someone is actually chasing me? Simple. Number one, I can hear them, and number two, when ever they show up, I get this weird feeling down my back. Like right now.
A long, eerie shiver slide down my spine. My body, still running, rotated itself so I was running backwards. I faced the direction of “they.” Suddenly, I wished I had not turned around.
A long, snake-like shadow ran along the ground, slithering towards me. My back hit a wall with a SMACK, and I felt the air get knocked out of me. I let out a choked gasp. The snake shadow thingy was rising off the ground, and forming what looked like legs. Then a torso, and arms. Finally a head.
The shadow person was completely black. It didn’t look like it had a face.
I wanted to run, but I couldn’t move a muscle. I was frozen in fright. The shadow person walked towards me. By now, I was shaking.
I looked down at my feet. I started panicking. My body was bound to the walls by ropes of shadows. I started to feel claustrophobic(which was stupid in the sense that I was only bound by shadows, but when your scared, who could blame you?).
The shadow person but it’s face directly in front of mine, and lifted my chin up with it’s hand.
“Let me go,” I managed to whimper out.
“Now now, young Vala,” the shadow man (apparently) said in a sugary sweet voice. But it almost sounded like his words had a burned edge to them.
“My name’s not Vala! Who are you?!” I yelled into his face(or not).
