• The night is deep and dark. It sprawls like a prostitute garbed in cheap jewels on silk sheets of moonlight. The passing rain clouds blanks out the stars in the west and the smell of newly fallen rain taints the air.

A lonely car traverses the dark expanse. The bright lights slice the darkness, revealing what might be better left to be discovered in the clean sunlight of day. Small animals, hit unknowingly, litter the long expanse of pavement. Yellow lines run forever into the distance, till they disappear indo a deepening darkness.

A hum begins to echo through the darkness growing louder by the moment, but the car can not hear it. In an effort to make the night less lonely cheep music blares out from the open windows, any effort at harmony wasted. The driver sings along, his beautiful bass voice a contradiction to the ghastly music. His eyes blink as he strives vainly to stay awake, and get out of this wasted land and back to civilization.

The hum grows louder, and a dark shape emerges from the stillness of the night. Its passage is swift and savage, like an owl swooping down upon its prey. Only its soft hum betrays it in the night.

Soon the car and object are quite near, and finally the sleepy driver fights against sleep to identify the dark shape. When he does it is too late. With awful realization he swerves, but to no avail, the object – a fellow driver hits him full on and plows his car out of the way sending it flying like a broken toy..

It is now not a car, but pieces of scrap mental, blood stained, and fit for nothing. The body is trapped within, but the music plays on. The tone of the music changes, as if ghosts have turned the knob to welcome their newest member. Sad broken music plays out into the dusty air.

Only one person hears the mournful song, but too soon that listener is also carrion for the birds. Her mind was blank with the drink when she had started to drive, and all it took was running that sign, and driving on the wrong side of the road… and it was all gone, forever. Woefully she lives on into the deepening night, the music of her misdeed playing around her.

Her broken and bloody body lies outside of her own scrap of metal. The moist damp earth seeps what little warmth once resided inside the body. Slowly, carried on wings of the purest pain, and the awful realization of what she has done, she is carried off into oblivion, and a sleep that she will never awaken from.
