• Chapter 2- Aubrey

Of course Mr.Stanger was delighted. "Shall we go then?" he asked me. "Yeah." I said, still angry. Having food and shelter dangled right in front of you when your living in a old church for a year, sucks. So here I was in a freakin strangers car being dragged to who know's where. While having a guy staring at me constantly. Talk about a fun ride.

"Will you quit staring?!" I asked the boy frusturated. The boy looked away. He had black hair with red tips, no doubt natural. He must be at least seventeen. "No need to be rude Kara," Mr.Stranger said. "after all he is your partner." My What!? "My what?!" Okay I admit I'm not that imaginative, sue me. "Your partner. He is the only person in the world with your ability." Mr.Stranger told me with an obvious tone. How was I suppose to know that, I didn't get a book on "Who's Your Partner, Freaks Edition." And I obviously couldn't read minds. "Will you quit calling me boy?" The guy next to me asked harshly. Wow he can talk? I've been in this car for at least thirty minutes or more, and he said zip. "My apologies, Aubrey." Mr. Stranger said smiling in the review mirror, Aubrey turned red.

My hand flew to my mouth to smother my laughing. "What!?" Aubrey demanded. I probably wouldv'e said something very rude then but I was too busy trying to cover my laughter. "Aubrey!?" I gasped out. "So? It's not a girl's name." Aubrey insisted. "Yeah, cause that name sounds so manly." I couldn't stop laughing. The boy turned to his window, silent. I sighed. Wow, apparently no one has a sense of humor these days. They can't even laugh at themselves. I looked at the boy, I guess it was partly my fault. I should apologize. Just for you to know I'm not very good at all this sorry junk. One of my main turnoffs as you can see.

"Au- Aubrey?..." I said quietly. "What?" Aubrey muttered without turning. "Umm I'm uhh sorry..." There that easy... right? Aubrey was silent for a moment. "Whatever." He turned back to his window. What! This brat was just going to override my apology just like that. "We're here!" The headmasters voice said cheerfully. I glanced out my side window. Well this was not a school for sure. It was a white house with black metal doors.I stepped out of the car holding the door. Definitely not fit for an academy. "Welcome to my house." The headmaster said with a bright smile. Oh now I get it, I started walking forward, then stopped in the middle of my tracks. Wait, what was I doing? I only agreed to go to his school not his house. The Headmaster saw me stop, he grabbed my hand, and pulled me to his house. "Hey!" I protested. But by the time I got that one word out we were already on the frontstep. Curse him for his quickness. Aubrey looked at me strangely. "Your afraid?" His voice chuckled out. "No!" I snapped at him. I twisted the headmasters grip and slid my hand out. I turned around. "This was just not what I expected. I thought we were going straight to the school."

"You really think your'll go the academy dressed like that?" The headmasters tone was full of disgust. He pulled open his front door and hustled us inside. I repeat, that jerk! "What's wrong with my clothes?" I demanded, scanning myself over. Dirty ripped jeans, black tank top, cruddy sneakers, and a old tattered black hat. I thought I looked pretty darn well, my opinion apparently wasn't good enough anymore. "You will be wearing this for now on." He handed a black box with a red ribbon on it. Something told me, I was not going to like what was in this evil box. I lifted the lid slowly, steadying my breathing. I stood there for a while unable to react. "No." I said and closed the lid. "You have to wear it, besides your a girl so start dressing like one." The headmaster insisted. I threw the box at him. "Then you wear it if you like it so much!"

The headmaster handed the box to Aubrey and crossed his arms with a determined look. "Kara..." he warned. Well two can play at that game. I crossed my arms too and put on my ever so famous stubborn look. "I wouldn't wear that, even if the world depended on it." I said stubbornly. "Then you will not attend the academy." he threatened. That's his biggest threat? Works for me. I shrugged my shoulders. "Alright, well thanks for nothin'." I turned toward the door. Now all I needed to do was figure out how to get back to my home. Home meaning the old crumpled church. Ah well, beats staying around here. "Let's check this house." A voice murmered outside. I looked out the screen door and saw two men carrying flyers. One of their briefcases said in big letters- Missing Children Unit. The worse thing was they were heading straight to this house. I flew the door shut and turned slowly around. "What was that for? I thought you were leaving. Now you shut door which is your only way out. Your weird." Aubrey said going up the staircase and turning the corner, leaving me and the headmaster alone. Mr.Stranger wore a peculiar expression upon his face. I was silent afraid to say anything. "Kara,is there something you need to tell me? he asked. I didn't have time to explain my whole life story to him, I'll just have to make it short. "Well... I ran away from home and the Missing Children Unit are looking for me and I don't want them to find me." I said all in one breath. Talk about impressive. The door bell rang.

"And... they're here." I muttered. Mr. Stranger smirked. "Seems to me like your stuck. And the only way out is for you to attend the academy..." I knew where he was headed. I groaned. The door bell rung again. I didn't have time to argue. "Ughh! Fine! Tell them you've never seen me and I'll wear that ridiculous costume of yours." I grabbed the box that Aubrey left on the floor, heading up the staircase. "Uniform." The headmaster corrected me. "Whatever." I said. Turning the corner, I threw the box in a bedroom and flattened my body against the wall, listening. The door bell rung again. Downstairs I heard Mr. Stranger answer the door greeting his uninvited guests. No doubt wearing his pasted on smile, the same one he used when introducing his oh so wonderful academy. He invited the "gentlemen" inside the house and into the living room. "We're sorry to bother you but we're with the Missing Children Unit. Have you seen any of this children?" One of the men said. Hearing a rustle of papers and the headmaster's snicker, I walked casually to the staircase, in order to hear better. "No, I can't say I have." Mr. Stranger said bored. "Well then, have you seen this girl? Her name is Kara Reynolds, she ran away from her home last year."

I sighed, man did I hate my last name. "Hmmm. Let me think." The headmaster said loudly. I growled, he better not say a thing or I will definitely mess him up for good. "You know you shouldn't spy on people. It's very rude." I jumped turning to see Aubrey leaning right beside me. How long had he been there? Glaring at him, I shot back. "Yeah! And you standing there silently making me freakin' jump ten feet in the air is not rude!?" Aubrey put his hands behind his head. "Hey, this is my house. I can do whatever I like." And saying that he walked away casually. I would so like to strangle him right now.

"Well, thankyou for your time." The men said and left through the front door. I let out a huge sigh of relief. "Thank goodness they're gone." The headmaster looked up at me while I hung over the banister. "Don't forget our agreement Kara. Now go take a shower and let me see you in that pretty uniform." he instructed me then called Aubrey downstairs. Grinding my teeth I walked into the bathroom. Pretty uniform? More like horiffic halloween costume. I turned the shower on and locked the bathroom. Sliding my clothes off, I got into the shower. "Ahhh." I breathed. The hot water streamed down my back. I stood in there washing my hair with shampoo I supposedly found {hopefully not Aubrey's} while singing a random tune. I never knew how much I would miss hot water. I stayed in the shower absorping the heat for about thirty minutes. Relizing I would never go to that awful church again, never have to be on the run. I would be going to a secluded academy, full of teenagers just like me. Maybe now I could finally rest.

Aubrey walked into the room, looking around. He was finally away from Freight, he jumped hearing a noise. Freight probably closed a cupboard loudly. Turning around he thought to himself, she'll be in the bathroom for a while. No need to worry, most girls take about an hour anyway. He chuckled to himself. But Kara was not like most girls, she was somewhat unique.

His eyes finally fell onto the black box. The box with a uniform that Kara refused to wear for some reason. The reason that had drived Aubrey crazy. Why didn't she like it, Aubrey had no idea how it looked like, but he was going to find out. Stupid Freight wouldn't let him look at it, he had said that Aubrey would find out when his "partner" wore it. So that he can fully appreciate it's beauty on Kara. Aubrey definetely believed that Freight was half pyscho and half perverted. Why would he care how it looked on Kara. It just was, when someone knew something that Aubrey didn't know, it would drive him insane. A very annoying habit that he was forced to live with. He slid the bow off and looked behind his shoulder making sure Freight wasn't coming to check up on him. He opened the box then held his startled gasp. There was nothing in there! Was this a joke that Freight decided to play on him?

"What a shame. Looks like you'll have to wait." Freight was over his shoulder looking at the box. Enjoying Aubrey's look of disappointment. "You know good things happen to those who wait." Freight quoted. "Like I care." Aubrey said stubbornly. He strolled out the room with Freight by his side. Hearing Kara singing he stopped in his tracks. She had such a soft voice. "Beautiful, isn't it." Freight stood by the bathroom door, staring at Aubrey. "Whatever." Aubrey said rolling is eyes, letting his stubborn side get the best of him. Aubrey changed the subject. "You believe she's the one?"

"Perhaps. We will have to keep an eye on her." Freight replied with an intense expression, his voice mysterious. Aubrey sighed and walked down the stairs, leaving Freight alone.

Yes. Freight thought. We will have to, this girl is much different than he had imagined. More fierce, stubborn, and headstrong. When the time comes, he will have to change her mind. Aubrey or himself will do it, if she yet still refuses, she will die. Simple as that. No contradictions. This plan will work, even if he has to kill half of the student body, he will make it work. Aubrey on the other hand might become a distraction, if he falls for her. Hopefully he won't for his sake only. This was necessary if he wanted to achieve immortality.
