• One Winged Angels

There was once an angel by the name of Gabriel. He was a loyal servant to God. The angels in Heaven disliked him because their Lord favored him, and he was jeered at with great animosity. Although favored, he was treated as an outcast in Heaven. All the beings of Heaven convinced him that he was a failure, and this failure is why they did not speak with him unless in front of their God. Gabriel had the most gorgeous wings in all of Heaven, and he cherished them greatly. The wings also gave him reason to boast, but he never did. No one trusted his prowess and ability because the higher up angels never gave him any chances to show his excellence; they knew he would do even better than themselves.
There was a fair-skinned maiden by the name of Celeste. She was always in a somber, gloomy mood and kept her distance from all the other humans, yet it was she that was as kind hearted as the purest angel. Her lips were as vibrant and red as newly blossomed roses. Celeste had long black hair that was a shade darker than the night. All of the angels were ardent admirers of her. Her skin was as pale as the new moon. The angels would peek over the clouds to see her scribbling another picture. She was so gifted with this talent, and they loved to see her draw. They disliked, however, that all of her paintings had a repeating pattern of sadness.

“The poor girl has no guardian to protect her. No wonder she cries,” said one angel.

“She often closes her eyes as well to sleep and dream. If I were living on Earth, I too would shut my eyelids, for the Earth is an ugly place. If I were near her though, my eyes would be open at once,” said another.

“Oh, what I would do to be her guardian. Alas, she cannot see me when I fly down to her. All of the angels have tried to wake her from her saddened stupor, but it always fails,” said a pretty female angel.

    “I could try,” said Gabriel.

“No. No. No. You always mess things up,” said a high angel.

Gabriel wanted to see who this girl was, but he mostly wanted to solve the problem for his Lord. Plus he heard stories of the Earth. A person could conceive ideas completely on his or her own, and they could even share it to their liking. Unfortunately, the world was a terrible place filled with lies and deceit.
Gabriel was called on by the Lord to go to Earth to see Celeste. He descended to the human’s world, and he saw Celeste cradling her legs against a wall. So his eyes perceived the beautiful girl bathed in the sunlight that flooded the room. Beams of light dripped rapidly upon her like light reflecting on a penny being thrown into a fountain.

“Your beauty speaks through your art as well as your soft visage,” declared Gabriel.

Celeste wasn’t used to such kind words, for she did not realize that she was both beautiful and talented. She was shocked to see an angel standing before her. His soft, gorgeous wings wrapped around her delicately with much care, and she fell into them without question. She felt warm and safe there. Soon they were in love, speaking of ideas and morals they shared.
It was announced that Gabriel had to depart from her to let another angel guard her. He didn’t like that at all. He didn’t like that he wouldn’t see her, or the idea that someone other than himself would guard her. He trusted the others' abilities much less than his own. He knew he would lay his immortality down for her. Celeste was even more miserable than before upon hearing that he had to leave. He couldn’t stand to leave his love, but he had to remain obedient to God’s rules. Right before he was to leave the human world, an omnipotent voice commended him for staying loyal and obeying despite his own wants. Gabriel was humble, and he said thank you to the praise he received.

“My child, you have done well by respecting my wishes. But do not go yet, for I have a gift to give to you if you remain obedient still,” said the voice.

“Thank my Lord. I will do anything you ask of me,” replied Gabriel.

God instructed Gabriel to cut off his prized right wing and give it to Celeste, for then she would receive immortality, status, and crowns like the angels.

“I will give her one of my wings, for I can now not fly without her. I cannot weave across the sky unless she comes with me. I do not wish to go anywhere without her, nor would my work for you be worth having without her by my side. I would do anything you ask of me, this I have proven, but I wouldn’t be content without my Celeste,” declared Gabriel.

So he cut off his wing without the slightest hesitation and sewed in onto Celeste’s back. It made her even more beautiful, which he did not think was even possible. He started crying in response.

“You, who shine brightly with the light of Heaven, bear absolutely no shadows, yet you cry out with grief at your fate. You do not need to lament for this. You, who are the angel of light, shattered chains of darkness that buffeted me. And delivered a ray of light to me, just as a kaleidoscope sparkles. Your light overtook my dark; because of that we are eternally bonded together. The wing you have so benevolently given to me without the slightest hesitation will reflect our love, togetherness, and your loyalty to God,” said Celeste.

“I cry not for the loss of the prized wing, the tears that run down my cheeks are from joy. I am elated to have you to fly with. We will be with each other for all of eternity. Let the angels' greed eat them up, and let our altruistic God give many more blessings to all of Earth,” said Gabriel.

The two angels flew off into the distance very joyfully. Because of Gabriel’s lack of selfish desires to sacrifice what he cherished the most without hesitation, he was rewarded with his true love.
