• Warriors: Dark Blessing Prologue

The forest was dark and damp from the late afternoon rain. A light breeze blew through the trees, and the stars could just barely be seen through the clouds. The major source of light was the moon, a shining silver medallion in the sky.
Suddenly, a small black Tom burst through a nearby bush, his amber eyes wide in fear. He knew they were behind him; he could hear their taunting voices and sense their cruel presence. He crashed through a patch of ferns, nearly tripping over a tree root. He didn’t dare to stop, fearing what would happen if they caught him.
Suddenly, the ground dropped out from under his feet. He was taken by surprise, and tumble down the steep slope of the ravine head over paws, bumping painfully against rocks and bushes. He desperately tried to slow his decent, but was unable, and upon reaching the bottom, struck his head on a rock. The world swam before his eyes as he slipped into unconscious.
Two cats appeared at the top of the ridge; one was a grey tabby she-cat and the other a pale Tom. They looked down at the small Tom at the bottom of the ravine with cold, cruel eyes.
“Should we go get him?” asked the Tom.
“No,” replied the she-cat. “A fall like that must’ve killed him. Besides, we’re far enough across the border that if we get caught, we’re history. Come on.”
With that, they turned and left, leaving the young Tom dying in the ravine.
