I hear your voice resonate through my head,
    it whispers, Don't forget me.
    But how could I forget?
Rather, it should be the other way around.

    Your music is intoxicating,
    soft and caressing,
    sad and mournful.
It's so hard and easy to believe that
    your fingers and your feelings
are all that coax the notes
from the white and black keys.

The moon shines through velvet drapes
    red, like blood,
    and softly illuminates those keys
with a silvery dust that seems ageless
    not like you, or me.

Your dark eyes meet my own,
no need to look down at your fingers,
as you add your voice to the notes,
    and say,
    What do you hear?

    You're waiting, I say,
the automatic response I know not.
    For what?
That is your question, and I somehow know the answer.

Your voice is a harmony all on its own.
    You're waiting for a voice -
Someone to make the melody whole.

    How do I know this?

A mournful smile touches your lips,
your fingers stop lullabying to me,
    though the haunting melody
    still echoes through my mind.

    Your hand reaches out and
    touches my face,
    with a soft, delicate touch
    that makes me shiver,
    despite your sorrowful smile
    that I absolutely hate.

Indeed – I'm waiting for you,
you say, and then you lead forward in
the darkness that is before dawn,
    with nothing but soft moonbeams
lighting upon the two of us
as your lips brush against mine.

    And then you're gone.

    I open my eyes.
I'm sitting on the piano bench,
and I'm by myself with nothing but
the rays of Dawn's first light
    to keep me company
    on this rueful day.

And a tear rolls down my cheek,
    the taste salty and bitter,
as I'm left to the cruel day, and my memories of
    your music and the Night.

    Someday I'll join you,
    my companion in voice,
someday our night will never end.
But until then I'll keep you close,
    in my heart,
so that I can wait for you to come
    once again.
