Raggedy Anne was a fictional character written in the early 1900s by a man named Johnny Gruelle who wrote them for his daughter.
His daughter died at age 13 after getting a smallpox vaccine at school without the permission of her parents. Her parents blamed the vaccine for her death and Raggedy Anne became the symbol for Gruelle's anti-vaccination movement.
Her name comes from the combination of the titles of two poems,
combined the names of two poems, "The Raggedy Man" and "Little Orphan An - Date: 05/27/2007
