I used a simple number 2 (or 2 HB) pencil.
For the shading, I first did the dark areas as smooth as possible, then wrapped some rounded point object in paper towel, then smudged it. For the light areas, I shaded lightly and then smudged. I then erased any shading that went outside the lines.
