A picture I drew based on the poem 'Devoured' (pg 68-69) from the book 'Out of the Dust' by Karen Hesse.
In the poem grasshoppers swarm and devour the crops and the main characters mother's apple tree. The book of poems was set in the time of the dust bowl (1930's) in Oklahoma, USA. The apple trees were tended to and kept alive through the sorrow as a symbol of hope, but at the end of the poem, they are destroyed.
