Akira's heart pounded in her ears as she looked at the girls bloody back. Old and new scars mixed with the newest gashes that disappeared into the torn fragments of fabric that were once a shirt.
The woman sat up and wiped her sweaty bangs out of her face and sighed. “Please, if Kain comes back you'll end up like me. Miss, you have to get away.”
Akira stood and crossed her arms. “What's your name? Why is this Kain doing this to you?” The woman looked away and struggled to find the write words. “M-my name. . .is Ashiitaka. I am a Tengu demon, a crow demon, and the only one capable of opening the gate to the other side. The other side where the Fountain of Life is located. My master Kain wants to use the fountain to become immortal and rule this world.”
Akira's eyes widened in fright and held herself closer. “S-so this fountain. . .it's an old ruin? Dull, crumbling, standing alone in an endless landscape?”
Ashiitaka nodded slowly “but how did you know? No human has set foot there since Lady Rin and her child, Akira. That was twenty-two years ago and both died that day.”
Akira let her arms fall to her side and clenched her hands into fists. “NO! I'm Akira Sato! My mother was Rin and I'm very much alive! Ashiitaka, I've been dreaming about that fountain all my life and never knew why!” Tears filled her eyes as she remembered the past. “Ashi, how. . .how did my mother die?”
