the fountain-part three
Ashiitaka opened her mouth to speak but Kain cut her off as he stepped from the brush. “I killed her. It was easy. I used her to get to this creature.” He waved a hand at Ashiitaka. “ It's so trusting so it took to Rin rather quickly, and it seems it's done the same for you.” He walked to Akira blocking her from Ashiitaka. “You've grown up nicely, Akira. Such beautiful red hair,” Kain ran is hand against her cheek. “and so pretty. You look just like your mother.”

Akira pulled back and slapped him. “Don't talk to me, you freak!”

Ashiitaka ran at Kain but he grabbed Akira and held his knife to her throat. “Open the gate Ashiitaka or the girl dies, just like her mother, Rin. You don't want to make the same mistake twice do you?”

Ashiitaka stopped and stared panic stricken at him. She shook her head slowly and got to her knees, her arms stretched out in front of her. With her hands she formed a triangle and exhaled, focusing. The moon passed directly over head and created a thin sliver outline of an arch. Ashiitaka sent her out spirit energy at the outline filling it, creating the doors to the other side.

“Let her go Kain, she hasn't done anything wrong.” Ashiitaka said. “Go now and drink from that accursed fountain.”

Kain backed up with Akira towards the gate. “Good, Now stay there, you creature of filth. This won't take long, but first, this girl has seen to much. I can't risk her getting away for a second time.” He raised the knife and sunk it deep into Akira's heart.

Ashiitaka screamed as he let Akira fall, lifeless, to the ground. Kain turned and walked through the gate, into the other world.

Ashiitaka flexed her claws, her eyes glowing red, and swirling wind surrounded her. “You're the monster Kain! You're the creature of filth,” She said crying. “You have killed the only people that treated me with kindness and love!”

Kain ignored her and walked to the fountain. He cupped his hands and filled them with the water, the Life Elixir. He smiled and brought his hands to his lips and drank. He immediately laughed and held his sides. “This. . .this is wonderful! I can feel the power rushing through my blood!” He turned to come back through the gate but stopped at the sight of Ashiitaka standing in the gate way. “demon,” he said, “get out of my way or you'll meet the same fate as Akira.”

“No. You'll spend forever here. An eternity alone, never ending, never dying.” Ashiitaka backed up and using the wind she started to close the gates. “I almost pity you, you monster.” She used her life force to shut and seal the gates.

Ashiitaka fell on the ground next to Akira's body and touched her cheek softly. “My friend. . .forgive me, I could not save you. I failed again, just like I did with Rin. It's over now, and no one will ever get to the gate again.” Her eyes started to lose the life in them as she whispered, “I want to go w-with you. . .to heaven”

Dark clouds formed blocking the light of the moon and it began to rain. Ashiitaka turned onto her back and cried. “Rin. . .Akira. . .are you crying for me?” With her last breath she smiled and muttered a single word. “Thanks”

Good ending. I would have done the same of giving him a fate far worse than giving him the mercy of death.
