Chapter 3:

Solitude has many hiding places. But finding the person she's looking for doesn't take much time. A maid hides in the Blue Palace, using what she can to call the Brotherhood to help her. The poor thing is a tired looking Bosmer elf. Her dirty blond hair is a mess as she stabs the effigy weakly. She stops when Evelyn enters and throws her dagger to the ground. "You came, thank the Divines." Evelyn crosses her arms. "We have heard your pleas, just tell me how needs to die.." Artemis hangs in the back, watching this interaction closely. The elf woman sniffs as she places her hands together in a desperate plea. "A horrid Nord as taken over my farm. What's worse is he killed my husband and stole my boy. The guards will do nothing, I have no proof the farm is mine. I'm to weak to kill this man myself...in fear he might..." Evelyn holds out her hand to calm the woman. "Fair enough, I will kill this man." The elf sniff again. "Thank you, when he's dead, I'll pay you what little I have just please..." Evelyn didn't really need to hear anymore. "Where is this farm?" "It's just north of an old shack, south of Katla's Farm.." With that she leaves, Artemis following after her. They don't go far before she turns into a house and he glances around before following behind her. They enter through the basement, he doesn't say anything until they reach the main floor of the house. The place is huge but he has no idea why they just broke into the place. "Why are we here?" She glances back at him as she heads for the next floor. "I need to pick up a few things, make yourself at home." He stagers a bit, she owned this place? Before he could ask more questions she was already gone.

Artemis takes his time exploring the kitchen. There's food and other items covering the tables. It's a nice place, for the first time in a long time he feels at ease. He finds himself slowly making his way upstairs. The second floor has more mannequins, each one with a different set of armor. Weapons of all kinds cover the walls and even a few hang from the ceiling. A strange table with markings on it is behind him. As well as a book and a few glowing gems. There's a smaller bedroom off to the side, looks like it was made for children. It didn't look like she came this way, it might have just came with the house. So he turns and heads for what he could guess is the master bedroom. While he was off exploring she had grabbed her Nightingale armor. She laid it on her bed as she changes out of her clothes. If she can't remember the last time she did so, it was time to change. She had already slipped on the lower half of her armor as she tries to find a tight enough tunic to wear. As she's poking around her wardrobe Artemis takes a peek, it was a quick glance and he almost looks away. He had more or less promised himself to stay away from women after what he went through with Calihye. But the scars on her back gave him pause. He knows those marks, the thin stripes of leather against skin. He doesn't think as he makes his way into her room. She was about to slide into her new outfit when she feels a warm hand on her back. She jumps a bit as she turns to see Artemis. His lifeless eyes burn with a strange rage that puts her on edge. "Who harmed you?"

His gaze is still down, but it's hard to tell what he's looking at. He was much shorter then her so his head only came up to her breast. "Pardon?" The question catches her off guard, as much as the look in his eyes. It take him a moment to look up at her. "The marks on your back..." It takes her a moment before it slowly clicks into her head. "Oh, right." She tends to forget them, she can't see them after all. She shuffles as she slides her tunic on, his stare is making her far more nervous then it should. "It happened when I was younger. A war broke out some thirty years ago when the Aldmeri Dominion invaded. High Elves, think they're better then the lot of us. But as the war went on, they decided to make a point on slaughtering the entirety of the Emperor's Blades. His protectors, my father was one of them. I don't remember much, I was only like five. But I remember them storming our home and I was kept alive. Reeducation, they wanted to turn me into an agent or something of the like. But the fighters guild found me and rescued me." He doesn't say a word, but his rage slowly starts to fade away. "Now if you don't mind I'd like to finish getting dressed..." Watching him quickly shuffle out of her room was slightly amusing. She slips on her armor, picks up a ebony bow and her ebony blade. She always left them here when she needed them. This way she could always remember where she leaves them. She has a habit of leaving just about everything everywhere. She finds Artemis in her kitchen. He looks her armor over. It's pure black, a bird of some kind covers the chest. She pulls her hood over her face and all he can see are her eyes. Or what he thinks are her eyes. "Alright, lets get going."

She picks up a large quiver of ebony arrows before heading out of her home. She leads him out of Solitude and down the main road. Katla's Farm isn't far so all they really had to do was cross the waters. She heads for the sawmill and goes from there. It's not long before they find the farm in question. She finds a place to hide as she watches the place closely. It's so tiny, only a small area had been cleared for growing what looked to be cabbage. But they're dying, no one is taking care of the place. The door swings open violently and a large Nord steps out. His hair was a deep brown and his beard matched. He idly itches it before he grabs something, a small boy and throws him outside. The poor boy is only wearing an old sack on his tiny body. It doesn't look like he's been given much food. "Damn it boy I told you to water the cabbages!" The poor boy ducks his head. "I did, I swear..." The much larger man is about to rise his hand, but stops. All the boy hears is a soft 'thunk' and he glances down. A lone arrow is now coming out of his chest. The Nord tries to pull it out, but falls back, dead. The boy kicks at him, making sure he was dead. Evelyn slowly comes out of hiding, placing her bow on her arm. "Relax kid, he's dead." He jumps as he looks up at her. He's part elf, his pointed ears a slightly more round. Her mouth twitches at this, but says nothing. The boy sniffs and runs up to her, hugging her tightly. "Thank you mam, I didn't think anyone was coming for me. Have you seen my mama, is she okay?" Evelyn kneels down, placing her hand on his head. "She's fine, she's hiding in the Blue Palace, I'll take you to her.

He wraps his tiny arms around her. She doesn't think twice on carrying him. She just lets out a low sigh as she rubs his back. "It'll be okay..." Artemis says nothing as they make their way back to Solitude. She makes her way to the servants room and finds the female elf from before. She sobs as she takes her boy, hugging him tightly. Before the elf could pay her, Evelyn stops her. She hands over her own gold to the elf. "I know you lied, but you're weak. Next time do better for your boy. Or else." The elf pales, but nods slowly. Evelyn says nothing else as she turns to leave the palace. Once outside she removes her hood, running her hand over her face. "I wonder about people sometimes...no matter." She did what she came here to do. She fulfilled her contract so there was no reason to stay. She'll keep her armor this time as she makes her way back to the gates. Artemis is eyeing her sword before he turns his gaze to her. "Where did you get that blade?" She turns as she slides the blade out of it's long dark sheath. "This, I got this as a gift from Mephala. A Daedric Prince, it's like your dagger. It steals the life force out of any the sword makes contact with." It's a beautiful sword, slender, but he could see how powerful it was. She places it back where it was before she starts walking again. "The Daedric Princes are like Gods, only they don't need us to exist. Some of them have grown weaker over time, but that won't mean they'll fade over time." Artemis nods his head slowly, so they had Gods as well as these Daedric Princes. It sounded a bit odd, for him at least. Not that he put much faith in the Gods to start with.

"So what about the armor?" She glances down as she walks. "I got it from the thieves guild. A gift from Lady Nocturnal herself." Artemis rises a brow, so she was a thief as well. As they got closer to the gates, someone comes running up to her. A tired looking courier catches up to her. "Got a letter for you.." He reaches into his bag and hands her a note. "Looks like that's it, got to go." He turns and wonders off. She blinks as she lets out a low sigh. "I would really like to know how he always finds me..." She opens the note, reading it carefully. Her brows knit slightly. "Looks like we're going to Whiterun.." He crosses his arms as he looks at her. "Something going on?" "Not sure, a friend of main says he found something odd." The note had came from Vilkas, asking her to return to Jorrvaskr as soon as she could. She heads past the stables where Shadowmere was waiting for her. "Aside from working with the Brotherhood I'm also a member of the Companions. I joined them first to be fair. They don't know I'm an assassin, and I'd like to keep it that way. They tend to frown at such things.." She hops onto her horse, Artemis summons his own as they ride off. They remain side by side as she leads the way. "I take it these Companions lean toward the more goodly side?" Artemis isn't a fan of those who clam to do good. Only for them to do more harm. He's seen it first hand back home in the temple to Selûne. "They protect people yes. They're like my other family." She heads south, not saying much else. The ride gives him time to think of what he's learned so far about her. He's still left with a few questions however.

The sun was setting by the time they got to Whiterun. Artemis glances around, nothing but open fields as far as the eyes can see. She leaves Shadowmere at the stables, the people here didn't ask questions. Not since they knew who she was. Sitting just outside the gates Evelyn sees someone familiar. "Aela." The huntress smiles warmly as they shake hands. "It's good to see you again Harbinger. I take it you got our letter?" Evelyn nods, showing the note. "What is it that you found?" Aela tilts her head up the road, but before she turns to walk she spots Artemis. "A new friend?" Evelyn had to be careful with Aela, the woman was a werewolf. But unlike most people the huntress didn't judge her for her outside work. "He's new to Skyrim, it's a weird story.." Aela rises her brow but nods as they head into the city. "I'll have Vilkas show you..." Whiterun was quiet, only a few people were still about the marketplace. Any guards they pass simply call her Dragonborn. Artemis leans his head up as they head for Jorrvaskr. The building was made from the underside of a boat. He was surprised how warm it was inside. Waiting for her was Vilkas and his twin Farkas. Farkas was a few inches taller and had longer hair, a thicker beard. He had far more muscle and he's at her side in a few steps and grips her into a bear hug. "Good to see you again sister." She lets out a low squeak from being hugged so tightly. "Brother let her go, the poor woman can't breath." Vilkas scolds him and Farkas lets go. "It's okay..." She gasps out, holding her side. "Nothing's broken...so what's going on?" Vilkas is the first to speak. He's hair is shorter and more well kept. He still has this shadow of a beard and a stern look about him. "A few days ago we got word of some bandits hiding nearby. Normally it's nothing we can't handle....however..."

He shivers just thinking about it. "The cave they were hiding in was covered in blood. It was so bad the ground was soaked in it. The walls were lined with entrails and other...body parts. We found who was responsible, he was completely out of his mind. When we killed him, we found this on his body." He pulls out a small glass bottle. It has a strange purple shine to it as she lets out a low groan. "I take it you know what this is?" Vilkas knew it was a Skooma bottle, but he also knows the drug doesn't make people do anything that bloody. "Kordir's Skooma, and yes sadly, I'm very aware of what this stuff does." Evelyn shakes her head as she takes a seat. "It started with the Blackwood Company some two-hundred years ago. They would take jobs from the fighters guild. But gave it's members Hist Tree Sap. Dangerous stuff, makes you see things. Convinced a whole party into murdering a village, by making them think they were goblins." She lets out a deep sigh as she leans her head back. "About eight years ago, we got word a group of bandits where murdering locals near a farm...they were drinking this stuff." She points to the bottle. "Someone got it into their head it was a good idea to mix the sap with Skooma for an extra kick. Turns out it just turns people into maniacs. Bloody maniacs..." No one says a word until Vilkas pinches the bridge of his nose. "So you're telling me someone out there is using a Hist Tree?" Evelyn rubs the back of her neck. "I don't know, I didn't think this stuff would travel this far north..." Farkas is still a bit confused. "What's a Hist Tree?" Evelyn smiles slightly at the large Nord.

"It's a tree found in Black Marsh. The Argonians use it without problems, but they're used to the stuff. Anyone else can be effected by it's sap..." Vilkas sighs deeply as he starts to pace. "Still we need to figure out where this is coming from..." Evelyn leans forward, placing her arms on her legs. "Which cave did you find this mad man in?" "White River Watch, not to far from here." She taps her chin, unsure of what to think. "Damn..." She has a few ideas of where to start her search, but it's a long shot. "I have a friend, Wujeeta, she had a bad Skooma habit when I found her. I helped her get off the stuff but she might have an idea of who might be handing this stuff out..." She doesn't like the idea that someone might have brought a Hist Tree all the way up this far north. But really it's the only thing she can think of. "I would wash your hands, just to be safe and throw that bottle into the fire." Vilkas waste no time doing so as he covers his mouth from the smoke. Farkas turns to see someone standing behind them and he pulls out his large sword. "Who's there?" Evelyn blinks as she turns her head. "That's Artemis, he's with me." Farkas was quick to put his sword away. "Sorry friend." He didn't even see the guy, he just seemed to blend with the shadows. Vilkas frowns a bit, noting really liking strangers. Let alone quiet ones. She had him change just before they got to Whiterun. He was now just wearing a normal dark outfit. His armor was safe in her bag. Of course he was free to keep his weapons on him. She wasn't about to touch those. "He's knew to Skyrim and I've been showing him around." She waves for him to join as he stands by the table.

"Just to catch you up. But I think you get the idea, Skooma is a drug, not many people know how it's made but it has to deal with moon sugar. And no I have no idea what that stuff really is. Skooma is addictive, and can slowly make you sick." Artemis nods his head slowly, crossing his arms. He had been listening to the whole thing. Sounds like she's had experience with this before, and it didn't sound pleasant. "I'll make my way to Riften, I'll need you to keep your eyes open. I just talked Balgruuf into letting Khajiit into the city. Last thing I need is for people to start pointing fingers..." She blinks as she looks around the area. "Where's Kharjo?" "He's out on a job with Ria, they'll be back soon." Aela answers and Evelyn lets out a low sigh. "Good, keep your eyes open when they do. I really don't want this to get out. Last thing people need to hear is bandits going crazy thanks to drugs...." She rubs her eyes a bit, letting out a tired groan. She hadn't slept much and it was slowly catching up to her. "I'm heading home, in the morning I'll head for Riften. Tell the guards..." She lets out a low hum. "Tell them to watch for any unusual behaver, mostly people talking to themselves." She bids her friends farewell for now as she heads for Breezehome. She needs time to take this all in. Plus it's quieter and less people will ask where she has been. She hadn't meant for Artemis to get caught up in this. But it's to important to ignore. If this went on for to long a lot of people were going to end up dead or worse. "The fun just never stops...."
