Chapter 5:

Sara keeps her eyes down as she sat in Maxson's 'office'. It was still a bit odd it was his room, but there was only so much space on the Prydwen. The look on his face told her this was strictly business, but she was still nervous. "Relax soldier.." Her shoulders fall a bit as she turns her eyes to him. "Trust means a lot to me. The Brotherhood represents a tight knit family, working together, is the difference between surviving, and getting yourself killed. I need to make sure I can trust you.." She had her hands on her lap, her fingers digging into her pants. "Of...course sir." He didn't trust her, was it something she did? She didn't always have the best since of what she was doing half the time. Hell she was still trying to wrap her mind around being in a place like this. If she told him the truth, she'd be on the next trip to the nut house. "Then I need to know...everything." She blinks at this, what more did he really need to know? "What...is it you want to know?" "Family...you dodged the question before, and now I want answers." Her eyes go wide at this. "There's...not much to say sir...honestly, I'm sure their alive...somewhere, but they..." She goes quiet, he didn't need to know this. It shouldn't be that important, but his eyes seemed to be burning into her. It made it harder to keep anything away from this man. "They disowned me..." She never thought she would have to say that out loud again. How many 'doctors' had she talked to, only for them to blow her off? She lowers her gaze to her lap, she could still feel him looking at her. She hated that feeling.

"My folks split when I was ten...my...'dad' wasn't..." She takes a deep breath. "He wasn't faithful...my poor mom, came home one day only to be at the receiving end of one hell of an angry parent. Telling her to keep her husband away from her fourteen year old daughter..." She shakes her head a bit. "I was not there for that fight..but you can only imagine...whether or not he went to jail for that, honestly I hoped something happened..." She looks up slowly, seeing this man angry, was not a pretty sight. "Um...anyways, we moved...two days later my mother gets this stack of papers from my dad, mostly just to say he surrendered his prenatal rights. I never saw him again after that...for good reason..." She watches his fist tighten. "And..before you ask, no, he never....went that far. As far as he cared I didn't exist..." He slowly seems to relax at this, but nods his head for her to continue. She takes a deep breath. "We did alright, but...caps ran tight and before we knew it, we were on the edge of becoming homeless. So my mom got remarried...to an even bigger...jerk.." She was trying to stem down her swearing. "Well for my mom he was the light of the tunnel so what did I know right? At any rate, turns out the guy had five kids from his last marriage...and yes even I think that's a bit much..." She shakes her head again, keeping her hands on her lap. She shifts to cross her legs, a bad habit she had. "The only one close to my age was his only daughter. She was just two years older then me. And she basically saw this as a golden opportunity to finally be able to do whatever the hell she wanted."

She takes a small breath. "I have to admit, it was a damn good plan on her part. Use her charms, make me the bad guy. Every time I was late from school or whatever. It was automatic that I was sleeping around, hell according to my mom, I was totally getting it on with my best friend....who was gay." She looks of to the side for a bit. "I'm...still trying to figure that one out...but...there it is...but it just got worse....." There was another pause, she could feel her heart pounding in her chest. "I wasn't good enough anymore. All I was, was a reminder of a marriage that fell to pieces. She even admitted to me several times how she wished she could have a child like my step sister, rather then the one she was stuck with...so you bet your a** I packed my stuff at the age of eighteen to get the hell out of there...." She feels her grip tighten a bit. "But that's not the end of it....oh no. See, my step sister, wasn't as bright as she thought she was. She got herself pregnant...at the age of twenty-one...and this chick didn't even have a job....hell she did and got fired two weeks later..." She shakes her head at this. "Well, from what I recall, the people she went to sent a letter, you know, those fancy letters wishing you well on your new bundle of joy. Well guess who she thought the letter was addressed to?" She points to herself. "Somehow I was the one having a kid....at eighteen....when I never....you know what I'm saying..." She waves her hands as she puts them back on her lap. "I just....I couldn't understand it...how things got so bad, I mean hell I came...this close, to jumping into a flowing river...because it was slammed in how much I wasn't wanted..."

She goes quiet for a moment. "The only thing that stopped me that day was a passing officer. I don't remember his name anymore....but the look on his face, I'll never forget it. So I decided...I'd just push forward...that I wouldn't allow someone....to drag me down like that ever again. I made my choice...and I never saw her again after that..." She slowly looks back up at him, he hadn't said a thing this whole time. She could see the mix of anger and confusion on his face. "I don't talk about this much, because trust me, I've heard it all. Oh it was all in your head. You were just jealous because someone new came into your life. I'm sure it's not as bad as you're making it out to be...you name it I think I heard it...so I stopped bringing it up..." He slowly raises his hand as she stops talking. She blinks as he pulls out a bottle of whisky and pours a drink, pushing it over to her. At this point he felt she needed it more then he did. She didn't normally drink anything that strong, but she takes it, shivering at the burning feeling it left behind. "Um...thanks?" She could see his muscles twitching. "It's unforgivable..." He finally manages to say after a long silence. No one should be pushed to the brink of almost committing suicide. He'd seen one to many soldiers in his day, hold the pistol to their heads. What made it worse is he was the one that asked, and now he knew. Everyone on his ship had a different story. Hell even Danse could only remember so much. When the topic of his parents came up, he could only shrug saying the earliest memory he had was sleeping in a dumpster.

"It's not uncommon to hear, losing loved ones in wars..." His own father had been killed in battle, he was never to sure what became of his mother. "But....this?" It didn't seem like he could wrap his mind around it. She gives him a small shrug. "As...crappy as it is. That's just how things turned out...I may have had a small moment of weakness...and I won't lie, that feeling, I'll never forget it. It was like everything just came crashing down all at once...and suddenly...it just didn't matter anymore..." She lets out a low sigh. "It's hard to wrap your head around it...isn't it?" He doesn't answer but he just pours a drink for himself. The poor man, not that she blamed him. "Life sucks sometimes...all you can really do is just keep moving forward...no mater what tries to slow you down..." Maxson seems to think on her words before nodding, sitting up straighter. "Your a strong fighter...I just wish our paths crossed sooner." She blinks at this as he slowly stands up. "You're here now, and I can see you see things the way we do. I couldn't ask for more for a soldier, even if your still a bit new to the life style." She keeps her eyes on him as he makes his way over to her. "Thank you.." She quickly gets up and bows her head to him. "Of course...to be fair...I'm sorry you felt I was hiding something from you. I understand why trust is so important...considering what we're up against.." He seems pleased with this, but it was hard to tell under that beard. It really wouldn't kill the man to shave.

"And..no before you ask I still don't have kids.." He lets out a small chuckle as he shakes his head. "Trust me, we have plenty of parents on board the Prydwen. Single parents aren't that uncommon...but thank you for the information either way." She bobs her head again to him. "Of course, now anything else I should pour out?" He glances around a bit. "No...just don't mention the drink I gave you." She tilts her head to the side. "What drink?" She just smiles as she turns to leave. "Ad Victoriam sir." He watches her leave as he leans against his desk for a minute. He runs his hand through his hair before closing his door again. He really needed a moment to gather his thoughts after all off this. For the rest of the day Sara spends her time in the dinning hall, mostly shooting the breeze with other knights and a few scribes. She didn't catch everyone's name but they were good people. It almost reminded her of her days when she was in high school. She almost missed having such a huge circle of friends to talk to. They were mostly swapping stories of work. Some bloody, some a bit shocking, but it gave her the chance to really get to know these people outside of the one line banters. It was her turn for a story as she tabs her chin. The news of her once being a cook, had just about reached everyone by now and they wanted to know more. She could more or less keep these people entertained with the crap she had dealt with at her old job. "Okay okay, I have this one story...though I do suggest it's...slightly inappropriate." No one seemed bothered so she starts.

"Alrighty then...." She blinks as a few of them scoot closer to her. "This...was a long time ago, we were a small store, nothing fancy. We were just one of those tiny places you find in the city where your in and out and home before you know it. Well there was this one day during the summer, we got slammed....like out the door busy. I have no idea what was going on....but my God so many people...took us hours to get through it." She clears her throat. "Well when it finally died down, we were so happy, but man the mess, so a few of us went out to clean the place up. At this time some woman came in with her kid to go to the bathroom, hadn't gotten the chance to clean that yet, but I can only imagine the state it was in. Because not two seconds later this woman was just glaring at me, fuming..." She licks her lips as she holds out her hands. "Now...it would had been understandable, if the stalls had ran out of paper or something...but no that's not what made her mad...oh no...it was the tiny little trash cans we kept in there...." She got a few odd looks, mostly from the men. "It's the 'ladies' room, they'er there for a reason..." That got several nods, they knew. "Well, I guess one such item was...hanging out and this poor kid got an eyeful, which at that age is gross. But again, that's not why mama was mad, it was the fact she had to explain to her kid what it was...." She keeps her hands up as they all kind of got confused. "This...woman had it in her mind that...she shouldn't HAVE to explain to her kid...the uh...joys of what it's like to become a woman so to speak...and you can only imagine. Me standing there, wondering what drugs this chick was on because....wow..." She slams her hands on the table. "Really, your not going to teach your kid the basics of human anatomy...really you do realize they teach you that stuff at some point right?"

"I didn't say that out loud...but I just kind of, nodded and hoped one of my bosses came to save me..." She covers her eyes as she recalls the last part of it. "At this point she reaches the whole, oh you people are just lazy and don't clean anything...blah blah....in spite of the fact I had a broom in my hands. Yeah I'm the lazy one...when..." She had to pause for a minute. "I think I snapped, I mean we just got through a major rush of people. So I did my best...'Ma'am, I'm sorry the bathroom was a mess, as you can see I'm on my way to clean it. We did just finish with a rush so before you go saying we're just lazy, I can assure you that is not the case'." A young man speaks up. "Let me guess, she didn't like it?" "Nope she went right to my boss about my..." She tries to think of the word. "Unprofessional behavior...my boss looks at me, to her, back to me and tells her to go right f*ck herself and that was that, it was the best day ever..." One of the Knights just starts laughing and soon the others join. Sara smiles a a young female scribe leans on her a bit. "You poor thing, no wonder you quit...." Sara just shakes her head. "It was...the oddest thing I had ever been a part of. But I think what really got me was how this 'parent' wasn't going to talk to her kid about...again something so basic...I mean how hard is it?" She places her hand on the shoulder of the woman next to her. Doing her best old man voice. "You see Billy, there's comes a time and a place...." This only made several more of them into a laughing fit.

Maxson was slowly making his way out, he could hear the laughing from his room. No one had noticed him yet as she just continues. "When you get older, you start to notice changes. Now Billy these are normal..." More laughter, someone was begging her to stop due to the lack of air they were getting. "Now now Billy, this is important, because one day, you'll fine that special someone and you'll need to know what to do. Now if I remember correctly, you put your left arm in, you pull your left arm out....wait that's not right..." She hears a thud and she looks down to see one of the younger members, on the floor just dying from laughter. One of the other Knights speak up. "Can you imagine if someone out there really did try to make it sound like that's how sex worked?" Sara looks up a bit. "You'd have a serous addiction to the hokey pokey, but it's okay because I hear you can turn yourself around..." More laughter, the poor guy on the floor even lets out a snort. "Stop...I can't breath, someone make her stop!" Sara just smiles all innocent like as she folds her hands together. "What, I didn't do it..." It took a few minutes for everyone to go back to what they were doing. She glances down at the poor guy still on the floor. "You alright there buddy?" He slowly sits up and gets back onto his chair. "I don't think I've laughed that hard in awhile, that was great!" She shrugs lightly. "I aim to please." He smiles brightly as he holds out his hand to her. "I'm Squire Jeffery Samson..you can call me Jeff." She shakes his hand. "Knight...err you can just call me Sara, I'm still...not comfortable people using my last name. It's so weird..."

He nods his head at this. He was a rather handsome looking fellow with light brown skin, grey eyes and a short buzz cut of black hair. "Yeah I'm not used to it myself. But I came here to learn to be a pilot. One day I'll be able to ride around in my own Vertibird!" His eyes seem to light up at this. "Sounds like a good goal to have my new friend." He only seems to light up more at this. "You think so, my friends always laughed at me..." "They'er just jealous, I mean who wouldn't be fling that around?" It was so easy, just sitting there, talking, but he quickly had to go for his drills and she waved him off. These really were good people, she just really hoped things didn't get to out of control. She was about to get up herself when she sees Maxson. Once again she wondered just how long he had been there. How much had he seen? He just seems to get something to eat before turning to leave. The man really was a mystery at times. Still it was hard to admire him for it, but she shakes the thought away. It was just best to go along with the flow. After all no one would really believe her if she told them where she was really from. All she had to keep up the act, the only thing left was to see what happened next. She just hoped it didn't all play out like the game did. She would have to step forward if Maxson placed the order to take out the Railroad. She takes in a deep breath. "One day at a time, still have to wait for Nate and Danse to return from the Glowing Sea..."
