"Quick, get those gates closed!" were the first words that were heard by the young prince on a dark night. His eyes opened as quickly as a hummingbird's pecking and he had rushed out of his bed to see what all the commotion was about. The prince couldn't believe what he saw out his window with the corner of his eye as he put on his slippers. The entire town was as red as flame itself, but that wasn't unusual for the prince's hometown, the Fire Village. What caught the surprise of the young heir was the darkness slowly creeping it's way through each and every building, with the villagers screaming in panic.
He opened the door and quickly ran down the hallways and stairs that made his castle until he ran into a familiar face, one in particular that was unhappy about the prince being out. "My prince, what are you doing out of bed!? It's too dangerous out here! You there!" said the prince's personal tutor pointing to a random guard, "Take the prince to the underground corridors and keep him safe!"
The ordered soldier grabbed the arm of the prince and dragged him towards the throne room. Resisting the pull of the guard, the prince caught a glimpse of his father, the king of the Fire Village. He quickly escaped the grip of his protection and hurried to the king.
"Father, what's going on!? Why is everything getting dark outside?" asked the worried prince.
"James!? What are you doing out here?" replied the king with another question.
"I heard the screaming and it woke me up. Tell me what's going on!" ordered the young son.
The king sighed, got down on one knee and said, "Listen, I need you to go with the guard and be safe for me, ok? This isn't a place for a child to be. When this is all over, I'll be sure to come get you personally, ok?"
The prince knew he wasn't going to get his answer on what was happening. No one tells children anything. The guard grabbed James' arm as the king gave him some last minute orders. "Make sure you get his little brother as well, and guard them with your life."
"Yes your majesty," replied the guard as he took the prince to the throne room. Behind the throne was a set of stairs that led to the underground corridors, a secret escape passage used for the royal family in times of need. "I'll be right back," said the guard as he went upstairs to fetch the prince's younger brother. When he returmed, they all hid for the rest of the night...
The kind took all of his forces to the edge of his village, or what left he could see. "Steady now, men! Hold your ground!" ordered the king. The darkness stopped, and a man stepped out into visibility. The king scowled at his old friend as he stepped forward. "Chrono, you coward. Why would you attack my village in this time of peace? Have we provoked you in any way? If so, allow me to fix the problem and stop this mindless bloodshed!" pleaded the king.
The man listened, and laughed at the request. "You old fool. Do you not see what reason there would be? Maybe your old age has gotten to you," said the king of the Darkness Village.
"What are you getting at? Tell me!" ordered the Fire Village king.
Chrono sighed and replied, "Your village was easily becoming the most dangerous with it's numbers in military, and in population alone. I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't going to be a surprise uprising that no one could stop."
"You should know better than to accuse me of such things. No one strives for peace harder than we do. It's our passion for our home that strives us to be our best, but not put it to the test," said the Fire Village king, correcting Chrono.
Chrono laughed again at the old man's words. "There was no test here. It's obvious who's losing this battle, our will you be the one to stop us?" asked the king of Darkness.
The fire village king closed his fists in anger as fire slowly engulfed his entire body from his feet to his head. "You come into my village, you kill my own villagers, and you threaten my family's lives in the process. I will be the one to stop you, personally!" yelled the kind as he charged at Chrono. In Chronos hand slowly formed a katana made of pure shadow, and he forced the blade through the fire king's charging body when he was close enough.
"You lose, old man," said Chrono as the fire village king fell to his knees. The fire soldiers all charged in anger at that moment and pushed the darkness soldiers out of the village that night. They were victorious, but at a steep price.
As the king lay on the ground about to die, he saw a vague image of his son, James, and Chrono about to face off in battle. "James..." was the last word that the Fire Village king ever said.
