The voices told me to.
Yumi's Love Story~
xxxxx I couldn’t help it. I was a beast, and I knew it. But I couldn’t help it.

xxxxx His face flashed in front of my eyes each and every time I blinked, and, for a while, I just didn’t. Two days without blinking. Then I finally slept. But never unconscious. No, I never actually slept. It was against reality. It would never happen. I was thankful for it, too. Sleep would bring dreams -- dream of him.

xxxxx I was a beast. I knew that as I lifted my face from the shoulder of a young girl. Her hair was shorter, like his. Her eyes wide, scared; empty. She was no longer of this world -- like him. I stroked her cold face before dropping her onto the ground. Her body flopped lifelessly, drained. Human blood could no longer satisfy, only dull the pain. The pain of a broken heart.

xxxxx The morning only brought more pain. I lay near the cemetery at night, searching for his grave. Two months of searching had brought me nothing. Multiple times in my fits of anger had I broken headstones with a simple kick or shove. And multiple times did I spend my days fixing those headstones. I knew what it was to lose a loved one.

xxxxx The burning in my throat alerted me to the hunger. The hunger that I no longer refused. I was off in an instant. I didn’t like to think while I hunted. Emotions swept through me -- anger, hate, remorse. So much remorse. So I let it all go. Nothing matters except the hunt, the thrill.

xxxxx I could already imagine her. Her long, raven black hair, flowing behind her as she stepped carefully about the store. Bright green eyes and a full-lipped smile greeting every customer. I would watch by the window, as if I was looking at the array of flowers behind the glass. Many a time did I think she was another one of me, for her beauty far surpassed that of a human’s. But every time I neared her, that sweet, delicious scent would bombard me. Her blood was like no others’. I wondered, on several occasions, why I had not taken her yet. But the longer I stalk, the more exciting the game got.

xxxxx She would see me outside -- never in -- and her heart would flutter uneasily before she turned away to water a flower or check the register. That is when I would leave, her disappointment trailing after me each day.

xxxxx But this was the day. The day I would take her away and taste that wonderful nectar pumping through her veins. I would no longer taunt myself every day; her only shield was that thin sheet of glass.

xxxxx However, my excitement had gotten the best of me. I was set to hunt, following her sweet scent. Many where shrouded in that smell, having passed through her trail. They died quickly. My mind didn’t register -- I was wild now, incapable of thought. Her scent lingered everywhere, causing my movements to be uncontrolled and erratic. I jumped on many children, playing on the road, sending the town into a panic.

xxxxx Bad. Scents were mixed everywhere, completely masking the flower girl’s. The snarl escaping through my lips was that of a monster. That which I am. My claws tore through a man’s chest, snapping his ribs clean through. A woman was ripped from her child’s grip, then from her limbs. Blood didn’t matter at the moment. It was the violence. Thoughts of it danced through my head as I chased another figure whose scent had tangled with hers. A snarl came again, alerting the figure -- a young boy -- to danger. He dashed down an alley way, dropping a book in his haste. My lips curled up into a menacing smile as I stalked after the boy.

xxxxx But her scent was gone All that remained was the faint stench of the others, running frantically into the streets, and this boy’s. He stared at me, fear in his warm eyes, and backed up against the wall. Voices came from behind me, loud. I ignored them and moved in for the kill. Venom filled my mouth as his scent grew stronger. A growl erupted from deep in my chest and I leapt at the boy.

xxxxxBut my jump was cut short; I shoved my hands into the stone wall on either side of his head, my feet sliding against the concrete ground. I stared into his blue eyes, unable to breathe. They were his eyes. My hand found its way to his face, caressing, brushing hair away. His skin, so fragile to the touch, warmed my own cold skin. My fingers rested on his neck, just above a vein. Feeling his pulse just sent me into a panic.

xxxxxThe screaming behind us had no time to elevate before I’d scooped him into my arms, jumping over the wall, and into the dense forest on the outskirts of town.
