The Spirit Apprentice: Part 1

Mercenary
Monk
Mage

The first two were to be expected of him. His father was the mercenary; a man of weapons who struck fear into those he went after. The man he was named after was the monk; a man of spiritual insight who was unafraid of anything. The title of the mage was fairly new to his family. The first one to pick up the art was his uncle, formerly a weapons supplier and mercenary himself.

When William was accepted to the Sage Academy, he wanted nothing more than to go. His parents were completely behind him. It was not because he wanted to go, it was because of the monk who was never allowed to. Vlad and Dess saw Liam in their young son. To his disappointment, William was treated like a best friend more than he was treated like a son.

At the academy, William was given the pendant of Spirit. It was not surprising because of his gift of telekinesis.

That night, he was addressed by an older student as he headed for his dorm.

The older student had skin much darker than his. He had a pair of brown eyes darker than his skin tone. His hair was a reddish brown and cut short. He wore the same orange pendant as William.

“I’m Keen Gabbro, apprentice mage.”

“William Li.”

“If you need any help with Spirit studies, you just come see me.”

“I appreciate the offer. Thank you.”

He found it odd that the older student addressed him. He did not see Keen address the other Spirit students in the Trainee class.

“There’s a new student who is like me. I can feel it from him.”

“You mean psychic?” Pitch asked from the bunk across the room.

“Yes, exactly. He’s got the strongest spirit I’ve ever felt from a student. He has a power, I know it. I want him to know he isn’t the only one.”

Aubrey looked up from his bunk under Pitch. “Maybe he does, Keen. Your mom has a strong spiritual power, and I’m sure you must have gotten something from her. Maybe he got his power from a parent too.”

“Maybe he can move things with his mind. I wish I could.” Pitch slid down from his bunk. “Then I wouldn’t have to get up to turn off this stupid light. Couldn’t they have put it closer to the beds?”

The light in their dorm room went out.
