A long, long time ago we almost never existed. The tame world you see now was filled with monsters. Arguably, some of mankind was just as monstrous as the beasts they claimed hunted them. The few who bore the courage to stand up to these monstrosities: both man and beast, became heroes that forged peace. But, this peace didn't come without a price. Where one terror fell, there would always be more to rise in their place.
Mankind needed heroes. And so, heroes were forged. A brave leader among them created a system, one which would almost guarantee their legacies would be carried on and future heroes legacies would continue on for ages to come. These heroes would come to be known as the divines. Unbeknownst to many, there are two spectrums to the divine system: darkness and light. Just as a great hero may chose the person to inherit their power, those who performed great calamities in life could also choose if they had great power in life. Darkness and light have always been at odds with each other.
To be chosen by a heroic divine directly was an honor. Those who weren't chosen could earn to be chosen, that is, if they could find a divine themselves. Many fought for that power, but few have ever succeeded. Yet, there are some who have decided to become divines themselves. It takes great dedication and sacrifice. No one can say for certain anyone who tries will even be successful. All the same, to refuse or even fight a divine's choice is a difficult task in itself. You'd have to go to the divine who created the system. However, divines have a heavy influence on who they choose. To break an evil bond requires a strong will, one motivated by something with all their being.
Also, the only way for the divine to truly find peace was for their mission to be passed down to another they deemed suited to the task. Can the world truly be at peace? What of the new heroes to come in the future? Only time and the choice of the divines will tell...
