Hey, this is part of a story my buddy Fierce_Goddess wrote. Wow, she's good!
My grandmother told me a story once, about her beliefs. Her Joanian beliefs. She and the rest my family were part of the Joanian church. However, I was a Kerian. I didn't believe, as the Kerians did, that there were spirits everywhere. In fact, spirits were exactly what my grandmother's story was about.
"Now, when the earth was formed," my grandmother began. "There were two kinds of spirits. The ones that roam the day like us, and those who roam the night. The two groups of spirits conversed with each other and decided that they would pair up. Each pair would share a body here on earth. But, the spirits of the night are devious and if they don't get their share of time controlling the human mind, they have the power to imprison us, the spirits of the day. As their name suggests, the spirits of the night are entitled control when the sun sets. If they don't get their share, you are just looking for trouble."
She glared at me at this point. You see I had been attending night school for the past few months and staying there well past 11:00. The Joanians believe in home-schooling so they refused to pay for me to go to a school so, I paid for night classes with the handsome allowance I was given by my dad. Nobody knew I was going to school, of course. My family thought I was taking my daily hike. (I stopped doing that a couple months ago. I don't think anybody has noticed.) I had just gotten home when my grandmother decided to tell me the tale of the spirits for the fifth time. I usually fall asleep after the part about the devious night spirits and I always have the same dream.
The dream begins in a field of heather. I'm usually lying down and there isn't a cloud in the moonlit sky. Usually a boy comes and lies down next to me and we talk about my troubles. It makes me feel better about my family's religion. However, tonight, instead of a boy, a girl walked towards me and there wasn't a look of comforting in her eyes. Just cold, hard anger. Her eyes weren't the only things freaking me out. Just the way she looked made me nervous. She was wearing a medieval tunic and jerkin and knee-high leather boots. Her brown hair was tied in a tight braid that went down to her mid-back and she wore falconer's gloves. Up close she looked like a Medieval me!
"Ashlyn Tucker! There you are! I've been looking for you for weeks!" She exclaimed.
"You were looking for me? Why?" I replied.
"I have a bone to pick with you!" she snarled.
"Oh? Like what?" I asked as I pulled myself up to lean on my elbow.
"My name is Ashlyn Tucker too. I am the night spirit that resides in the body we share and I'd say that I'm way overdue for my turn for control. In fact, you have had it for so long that I am entitled to have it permanently. But, I am merciful so I will offer you a chance to keep your time. All you have to do is survive 3 weeks here in the realm of the night and in that time complete a few quests. Sound simple enough?" she snapped.
"Wait, hold on!" I was feeling very nervous. Was what grandma had said been true? "I don't even believe in that night spirit mumbo-jumbo!"
"Well then, you had better start because you are stuck here whether you like it or not." she sneered.
"Okay, fine! What quests do I have to do?" I was finished with this dream so I just decided to play along for a little bit.
"Ok first you have to find a weapon of some sort. Then you have to tame a dragon, kill a swamp walker and finally, wake up." At this point, she disappeared. Well I know how to wake myself up. I pinched myself. Nothing... So now what?
