How long had she been in there this time?
This thought had crossed Aura's mind several times in the past hour or so. Moonlight filtered into the dusty study room through it's large bay window. And although the candle that she was using as a sole source of light was slowly burning down and melting wax onto the floor, Aura continued quietly scribbling notes onto some scrap parchment.
When she grabbed for her tea cup blindly, she was disappointed to find that it was long since emptied. Aura sighed, setting the porcelain piece back down and slumping back into her chair.
Her gaze drifted from the cup up towards the window. She could see the moon as clear as ever tonight, hanging above her manor as if to provide her with a little extra visibility for another one of her late nights. It was growing fuller, and only a tiny sliver of it remained indistinguishable from the endless stretch of the night sky.
"Beautiful.." Aura breathed.
It almost made her want time to cease for a moment. If only to let her revel in memories of nights long since passed. Many of her fondest, and saddest moments played out under the moon's watchful gaze.
Aura's habit of locking herself inside her study had been happening more often lately, and for longer periods of time. So it was no wonder she had been feeling as if the moon was her only constant companion through these troubled times of hers.
It wasn't as if she were alone. Her most loyal of house maids and servants were still residing within the estate, however, after one very particularly eruptive shouting match between an irate maid and herself earlier that week that had caused Aura to become even more reclusive within the safe confines of her precious study, all of her servants had collectively decided to leave their eccentric mistress alone. Opting to let her decide for herself when it was best to emerge.
Though they wondered if she would ever resurface. And to be honest, Aura herself had been wondering that same thing for a while.
But how could she face them now? After she had behaved in such a horrid and unfitting manner towards them, Aura doubted she had any right to.
But more than that. She also had other heavy thoughts on her mind, weighing her down and bogging up any real sense of clarity she might have once had. The only thing she really knew for certain was she was looking for something.
And that, that something could not be found in the endless pages she so loved to delve into and lose herself. This realization frustrated Aura further.
"I wish I knew.. What it is that aches within me so.." she said softly, still gazing longingly upwards at the moon. "Will I ever cease the endless sorrow? Both which I have caused to others.. and my own, which I've carried for many years now."
