Why I Hate Mary Shelley and Frankenstein
So , in english class, we're reading Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Now, after a year full of depressing, bad books, I was looking foward to a good read. So I picked it up and started to read. That's when everything went rolling downhill on a slope covered in big words and repetitive chapters. stressed . THIS BOOK IS SO ANNOYING. Mary Shelley did understand the idea of "concise". She thought that it is okay, or even fun to read a sentence that uses 10 times more words than was necessary. Mary Shelley was married to her thesaurus. Every sentence was overflowing with 75-cent words, making them difficult to read without barfing because of the verbose-ness of it all. Not to mention her love of the word "endeavour". If Victor is trying to do something, Nope, he is ENDEAVOURING to do something. Every freakin' page. Now onto the actual plot......which was barely there....it was buried under 15 -letter words. I'm pretty sure Shelley loved to hear herself talk, because she repeats the same ideas over and over and over again, just in different words...Sometimes not in different words. Now the ideas she was trying to get across were fine, and honestly, after mentally removing all of the big words and repeats, I enjoyed it. Now , I know this type of writing was typical for her era, the whole Romanticist thing, and I'm sure back then it was smashing. And most of the times,I appreciate the stylistic writing of past eras, such of that of Shakespeare and so on. But to me ,this book would have been so much better if she just said what she needed to say and be done with it. Honestly, the huge words made Victor seem even more pretentious then we already thought he was, and they clouded the plot. So I warn whoever wants to read this book: Bring a dictionary and patient mind.
