Snow and rain sprinkled against the window as she finally lifted her gaze from the hardwood floor and rubbed off the fog with her sleeve. Only the gleam from the wet streets and sidewalks were visible with the dimmed porch light on, which was bound to fritz out soon. With her arms folded, she clutched tight to her wool, gray sweater as she tried to deter the pervasive cold that seeped from the drafts throughout the poorly isolated house. She finally plucked a cigarette from the pack on the window pane. After it was lit, the young woman took a long drag as she returned to her thoughts. She felt exactly how the house was; cold, empty, and forlorn. Only the soft clicking of an old garniture clock could be heard through the room.
So badly did she want to leave. Not just the house,but this city. The state even. Many times the thought of buying a one way ticket passed through her mind, to leave all the painful, bad memories behind. The amount of people outnumbered those worth staying for, but her love for them anchored the young woman here. Yet still there was no one here to turn to about the warfare brooding inside her. The doubt. The lack of faith. Or maybe the yearn for faith? She didn't know. She brushed back her dark, chocolate brown locks and she finished the cheap tobacco with one last puff.
This year threw her around like dinghy in the sea, wrathful and unforgiving. It was apparent when her friends looked at her, they no longer knew who she was. Her so called family never knew who she was. She didn't care anymore. Despite the odds against her, despite the awful,pivotal events, she would continue to endure until light returned.
She would carry on.
