"Alchemy" is a term too often used in recent times. Aside from its start as the birthing place of modern science, it has grown to encompass anything that changes anything else. But, for lack of a better word, this is what Ryonin performs; Ryonin is an alchemist.
Only child born of a machinist and a soldier, one might have expected him to grow up to pilot mecha, in a world full of angst and pink hair. This was not to be, though. He takes more after his father.
At a young age, Ryonin exhibited a talent for the mystical arts. As his father had shown no magical ability, and his mother was not one of those pretty magical soldiers we see on TV in the early hours before school, this came as a bit of a surprise.*
Growing up, Ryonin would often watch his father work (he might have watched his mother, but the battlefield was no place for a child) and wonder at the intricate automata and elaborate timing mechanisms used there-in. He pondered why his father didn't use magic, as it was much easier to perform the same tasks. The answer settled on was "pride;" why do it the easy way, when the harder route was more impressive? This would be the guide to his development for years to come.
Between his formative years and the man we know now, little is known.
*Later testing revealed that his mother's legendary luck was actually subconscious utilization of her unknown heritage... Even after this revelation, she still preferred smashing faces. The father had absolutely no magical potential.
