Aeyera's Log of the Times
A log of the day-to-day happenings of a teenage writer and artist who suffers from Artist Block too often.
CITY OF SAINTS
A novel in progress by Aeyera

* Authors Note * This isn't the final copy for the prologue, I know. Simply I want to get an audiance's feedback on this. Yes, I realize that this will change many a time and may hardly resemble what you have before you. But I just wanted to throw that out there.

The book you hold in your hands contains all the knowledge of the duty you have now sworn to carry out, regardless of ethnicity, religion, skin color or personality. We have all come together in a most sacred crusade of out own, a mission to clense the world of the night-walkers, the devil’s allies and friends.
The vampires.
For centuries before us, they have walked the earth amongst us, lurking around every corner that we cannot reach. But now, they have emerged from the darkness in a fight of their own against our kind; for survival, for vengeance, for blood.
That is why we, the most noble fighters of our cause, have come into existence. And you, fellow warrior of truth, are amongst our ranks. We welcome you with open arms, weapons loaded for the fight ahead of you, with a single goal, in which you believe in like so many others.

Rosen Fyre Vampiric Elimination Force

It was never to be the same again. Not after that night, the last evening of my young, innocent childhood.

My tale begins on the day of my birth; October 30th, 2079. Children who I grew up around me chanted such sayings they made up for me like ‘vampire child’ or ‘son of a witch’, due to me being born so close to Halloween. Every year this happened around my day of celebration, where I was to turn another year older. Life, for me, was a mixed blessing then, torn between a mortal heaven & a version of hell on earth; my mother was an alcoholic, my dear father dead leaving me to face her on my own. Other relatives tried their best to avoid our household, as they saw my mother to be the shame of our family name, & in turn, me, for being her son.

The time came upon me when the world I knew spiraled downward, plummeting the young boy that was I at that time into a world of constant darkness, on my fifteenth birthday, in 2094. It was the one time that my entire family got together at my mother’s house for my birthday in my life, as far as I remembered. There was music like ‘Thanks for the Memories’ by a band my younger cousin liked called Fall Out Boy and another by an even older band, a song called ‘Birthday’ by The Beatles. It may have been the one time in my life I was truly happy.

But as the day turned to night, the sun setting, the moon rising, & the stars emerging in the heavens above, the party guests began to depart from our little house in Massachusetts. Our town always had this weird feeling as Halloween drew closer & it actually frightened me a bit. But I was too happy to care about that small fear inside of me, as I sat there in the living room, tearing open a package I had received in the mail from a friend who lived in New Jersey.

A noise from outside in the front yard grabbed my attention from opening the cardboard box which held a present for me; much too loud to possibly be a dog or a deer. Being the curious teenager I was back then, I found myself standing on the front porch, facing the street which was lined with lamps that glowed with solar-powered light collected from the sunny day. There was a single shadowy figure standing there, back in my direction and appeared to be dragging something large and heavy, human on form and stiff as a board. Shuffling hesitantly down the steps, the figure’s head turned in my direction, its’ eyes appearing to glow a shade of other-worldly green.

The street lights flickered as the stranger’s entire body turned to face me now, illuminating its’ features. His hair was white, short and spiked up. One ear was pierced multiple times and looked to be pointed slightly. But his looks didn’t shock me as much as what he had at his side.

My mother, skin pale & puncture wounds all down her neck & the back of her hands, had fresh crimson blood seeping out of them. Her face was frozen in fear & terror. Across the man’s face appeared to be the remnants of blood, streaked across his mouth and cheeks.

“What the hell?!” I heard my voice exclaim from the grisly sight that stood before me. The man’s pale hand was bought up to his face, wiping the rest of the red liquid from his mouth and black robe with red satin lining on the inside fluttering in the faint evening breeze.

My first encounter with a vampire.

And ever since that day, the death of my only living parent, the hatred of their kind has grown tenfold. I became obsessed with hunting those whose kind caused my alcoholic mother to die early & sent my life spiraling down another path of fate, one that was not planned for me. I checked out books at the nearest library on vampire myths and legends, observed movies with them involved & even how to fight against them if I should ever meet one again. Their biggest enemies, as stated in mostly every source, were werewolves & sunlight was an instant KO if they ever came into contact with it. The problem was, while I was eager to go hunting for those elusive night-dwellers, I had not the faintest clue on how to go about with the plan.

That is, until I spoke with a man, whose name was listed in a book on beliefs from around the world.

It was a hasty move, to call a complete stranger who could possibly be a vampire himself. But I went with my first instinct, & called this Zacharias from the comfort of my room.; I now lived by myself at age seventeen, appearing older then I truly was due to many nights without sleep & the stress I bottled up inside of me.

The phone rang five times before a male voice answered, “Rosen Fyre Organization. To whom do you wish to speak?”

“Cross Fire,” I stated simply. There was a click and two more beeps before another man picked up.

“Zacharias R. Alucard. Who is this?” he questioned.

Taking a deep breath, I spoke, telling him my name, where I lived & my current situation; how my mother was killed before my eyes by a blood-sucking, ill-hearted creature of the night.

The entire time he was calm, not speaking a single word until I was completely done telling him of what happened and not being able to add on anything else. Finally, with nothing else to say, he told me to meet him at an old abandoned church three miles outside of town. Every local resident knew of it, but never really went up there; rumor has it that it’s haunted by the ghosts of Civil War solders. He said it was the one place that was safe enough to meet without fear of being found. Why he chose this spot was unknown to me; his only reasoning for it was the same fact that he said it was safe for various reasons.

So, I met this man in thirty minutes time. He was quite old when I first saw him, standing at the old church’s weather-worn doors and bronze knockers tarnished. He wore a red worn-out cloak, the color of dried blood with a shimmering silver cross outlined in black on the back of it. One single silver ring sat upon his ring finger on his right hand in the shape of a serpent biting its’ own tail, and heavy black boots on his feet that tapped at the stone path beneath him.

My heart was as heavy as a lead feather, as I forced myself to speak. But the man before me managed to beat me to talking before I could even manage a single syllable. “You are young master Marcus, I assume?” With a shaky nod, due to the fact that I had no idea what was to happen now, I answered as calmly as I could. “Yes, & you are Zacharias?”

“Indeed I am. Crypto zoologist and expert vampire hunter Cross Fire, at your service.” The man said to me, taking three steps forward, up the old abandoned church’s old stone steps. With one hand, he pushed the weather-worn wooden doors in, creaking open as dust flew into our faces along with one or two brown bats. Almost immediately, we were surrounded in complete darkness, minus the dim glow of candles placed throughout the church. A single immense multi-colored stained glass window graced our gaze, the image of the one true God watching down on us with his truth-seeing eyes. Angels and saints surrounded him, raising their hands in prayer to him.

My eyes tried to take in the sheer grandness of everything; as a child, I never went to church except for Christmas services, but they were small & insignificant compared to this one. But I only had so much time to stare at everything, as Zacharias strode forth to a statue of the Virgin Mary & lifted up a lit candle. A sudden shaking came from beneath our feat, & the floor gave way to a secret staircase.

The entrance to the underground world of vampire hunting, known as Rosen Fyre.
