"What are you staring at?" She asked me as I gazed through the window at the torrential storm outside.
"The trees," I replied, my eyes slowly scanning the edge of the forest.
"What about them?" Her face was curious as she tried to locate exactly where I was looking.
"The tree," I started " is an utterly amazing creation. When the weather is hot, we sweat; we get feverish and worn out and short of breath. Likewise, when the weather is like this," I nodded to the wind and rain beyond the glass, "we get cold and sick and weak. But not the tree. No, the tree just takes is all in. So fortified is it, that those conditions which make life almost unbearable for a human only add to the vivacity of the tree; they help it to feel more alive." The last word spoken with a slight catch in my throat.
"True,but the sun can still scorch a tree, and the wind can still break its trunk." Her response was solemn, as if she didn't really want to say it.
I turned to look at her, and smiled a little; "but could the tree really be considered alive if it were unable to die?"
And so together we stood, and watched the storm.
