Can We Be More Than Friends?
Chapter Twenty-Five
Beep beep. Beep beep. My hands reached for the alarm clock. I got frustrated because I couldn't find it. Beep beep. Beep beep. Where the heck is it? I tried to get up, but something was weighing me down. I couldn't breathe. I tried to scream, but a hand was over my mouth. My eyes flew open, but there was only darkness. I bit the hand that was on my mouth. The weight suddenly disappeared. I could finally breathe again. I sat up on my bed. I reached for to turn on the light, but a hand grasped mine. I gasped, thinking it was a robber. With all my strength, I threw the person onto my bed and quickly turned on the light. On the bed, was Nick Duso. He was just as shocked as I was. It took me a moment to take this all in. "W-why are y-you here?" I asked, shakily.
Nick looked rather uncomfortable, looking anywhere except me. He's probably embarrassed that his ex-girlfriend single-handedly flipped him, a football jock, onto her bed. "Hello? I'm waiting for an answer," I said, tapping my foot.
"Look, I just wanted to talk to you," Nick muttered, standing up.
"Oh really? Getting on top of me and nearly suffocating me is a good way to chat! Could you at least tell me you were going to my house to pay a visit? How did you get in here anyway?" I questioned, marching up to him.
Nick was red as a tomato by the time I was done. There were suddenly tears in my eyes. For no reason. I turned my head before Nick could see. "Just go away," I whispered, walking toward the bathroom.
Something blocked my way. I looked up. It was Nick. He was crying as well. "Nick, I'm-
"Shh... it's ok," Nick said, hugging me.
No. This can't be happening. We broke up. why is he hugging me then? No. NO! I leaned away, trying not to look at him in the eye. "Why? Why are you doing this to me?!" I cried, running to the bathroom.
Nick tried to grab my hand, but I shrugged him off. "NO! I hate you! I don't want you, Nick Duso! I thought you were the man of my dreams, but I guess I was wrong. Why? How could you fall for such a slut like Anna? Why?" I screamed, slamming the door in front of his face.
"I was wrong! I know it now, Susie! Please forgive me. I love you more than anything in the world.," pleaded Nick.
I was trembling with fear in the bathroom. I kneeled down, wishing I could disappear from the world. I heard the door open; I turned my head, expecting an angel to take me away. But there was only Nick. He looked hurt and tired. That's what you get, Nick, I thought. He crouched down next to me, leaning toward me. He whispered in my ear, "Listen, I'm extremely sorry, Susie. I'll make it up to you. That's a promise,"
Before I could protest, he scooped me up, as if I was a baby. I grunted, trying to get out. But he wouldn't let me. He placed me firmly on my bed, and got out something from his pocket. My eyes bugged out. In his hand was a ring. Without warning, he stuck the ring on one of my fingers. "I know you hate me and all, but could we be at least friends? Don't get me wrong; this is just a friendship ring," Nick assured.
I marveled the ring, looking at the rhinestones encrusted on it. I smiled, looking at Nick. "Ok, but on one condition," I agreed.
"And that condition is?" asked Nick, his eyes gleaming with joy.
"Call me Sky from now on,"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Psst! Hey Sky!" hissed a voice.
I turned around in my seat, still dazed about what happened that morning. I snapped back into reality when a piece of rumpled paper smacked into my face.
"Oww!" I said, retrieving the paper .
I looked up, trying to find who did that. It was Jake, who was snickering. I rolled my eyes, opening the piece of paper:
Hey Sky! What's up with you today? What's going up in your mind? You've been daydreaming ever since this morning! Dx Btw, what's that ring on your hand? Who gave that to you?
I smiled at myself. I was about to answer his question, when someone took the note away. "Hey!" I whispered, looking up.
I cringed when I saw that it was Mrs. Nolan, one of the most strict teachers in the school. I groaned and buried my face as Mrs. Nolan read the note to the class. A few people snickered while others looked at me disapproval when I glanced at them. I glared at Jake, who was whistling away, doing his homework from another class. When class ended, I marched up to Jake, ready to give him a piece of my mind, Mrs. Nolan called me. I nervously walked up to her desk, wondering what was wrong. "Miss Flue, forgive me for being nosy, but could you also tell me where that ring is from?" Mrs. Nolan asked.
"Umm, it was from my friend?" I replied, confused.
"Oh. Just a friend? Hmm..." muttered Mrs. Nolan.
"Is there something wrong?"
"Well, the ring you're wearing is the exact replica of what I'm wearing right now. Which of course, is my wedding ring,"
"What? That's impossible! My friend told me that this is just friendship ring!" I said, looking at the ring.
"Then your little friend is wrong. I'll let you off the hook for now, Miss FLue, but if I catch you again passing notes, there will be consequences," warned Mrs. Nolan.
"Got it," I replied.
I turned around to find Jake, but there was not a single soul in the room except for me and Mrs. Nolan. Typical. Just typical. "Oh, if you're looking for your friend, he slipped out of the classroom when I was talking to you," Mrs. Nolan informed.
"Gee, thanks." I mumbled, making my way to the door.
