"Homophobia doesn't exist anymore"?

That's why 65% of gay teens have been verbally or physically assaulted at school, right?

And that's not counting the 57% of harassed students who never report these incidences to the school.

Get educated on LGBTQ issues.

On the Existence of Homophobia

arrow The Advocate: Gay Teens Report High Rate of School Harassment

The Advocate
An unsettling number of lesbian, gay, and bisexual teens are being bullied at school due to their sexual orientation—and they do not feel safe, says a new study released Thursday by the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network.

The national survey—of more than 3,400 students between the ages of 13 and 18—found that LGBT students are three times more likely as non-LGBT students to say that they do not feel safe at school. A stunning 90% say they have been harassed or assaulted during the past year.

arrow Religious Tolerance: Homophobia and Its Cost to American Youth

Religious Tolerance
According to a US Health and Human Services report:

"gay adolescents were two to three times more likely than peers to attempt suicide, accounting for as many as 30% of completed youth suicides each year....26% percent of gay youth are forced to leave home because of conflicts with their families over their sexual identities. Up to half engage in prostitution to support themselves, greatly increasing their risk for HIV infection."

[...]

About 5% of youths are gay. If the 30% figure is accurate then their suicide rate is up to six times greater than the general youth population. Using this data, it appears that homophobia, largely maintained by conservative and mainline Christian churches, is responsible for deaths of young gays and lesbians in the United States at a rate greater than the church exterminated "witches" during the late Middle Ages and Renaissance.

[...]

The National Youth Advocacy Coalition (NYouthAC@aol.com) has referred to two reports on homeless youth:

  • In 1988, the Los Angeles County Task Force on Runaway and Homeless Youth, issued a "Report and Recommendations of the Task Force" which estimated that 25 to 35% of street youth in that county are gay, lesbian, or bisexual.
  • Also in 1988, Seattle Commission on Children and Youth of Seattle, WA issued their "Report on Gay and Lesbian Youth in Seattle" which estimated that 40% of Seattle street youth are gay, lesbian, or bisexual.

Contrary to popular belief, homosexuality is not completely accepted in the rest of the world.

There are six countries that punish homosexuality with death.

There are two countries that penalize it with life in prison.

And there are countless more countries that do not guarantee equal rights and protection from discrimination for homosexuals.

Learn more about the inequality of LGBTQ.

Do you know what transphobia is?

It's the hate, intolerance and/or fear of transsexuality.

It is rampant among the world, even creeping into the homosexual community.

Myths and propaganda about transsexuality are everywhere.

The victims of transphobia are at even more of disadvantage than GLB.

Find out more about how you can end the hate.

Gay pride is NOT about "flaunting" or sex.

It's about embracing a hated sexuality and fighting for equal rights and treatment.

It's a way of saying, "I'm gay, I'm proud, and I don't have the same rights as you."

Gay Pride Has a Real and Important Purpose

arrow Why We NEED Gay Pride

User Image

There is no such thing as "going gay".

Danny Phantom =/= Reality.

LGBTQ don't yell, "I'm going gay!" and then transform into themselves.

Though there is no conclusive evidence for the exact cause of sexual orientation, it has been determined that it is not a choice.

End of story.

Want more details?

It's. Not. A. Choice.

arrow APA on Sexuality

APA
...human beings can not choose to be either gay or straight. Sexual orientation emerges for most people in early adolescence without any prior sexual experience. Although we can choose whether to act on our feelings, psychologists do not consider sexual orientation to be a conscious choice that can be voluntarily changed.

User Image

You cannot change your sexual orientation.

Reparative therapy? Don't make me laugh.

Funny, isn't it, how the people trying to "help" homosexuals by "converting" them are actually doing lots of harm?

Many of those who have gone through it have become very depressed.

Some of them commit suicide.

And it doesn't even work!

Studies have shown that you can convince yourself that you're straight--but you actually aren't.

Sexual orientation is determined by attraction. Not action.

Reparative Therapy Doesn't Work and is Extremely Dangerous

arrow APA on Reparative Therapy

APA
Even though most homosexuals live successful, happy lives, some homosexual or bisexual people may seek to change their sexual orientation through therapy, sometimes pressured by the influence of family members or religious groups to try and do so. The reality is that homosexuality is not an illness. It does not require treatment and is not changeable.

arrow Religious Tolerance: Estimates of Success

Religious Tolerance
From the available data, four studies reported a "success" rate during conversion therapy of 0.4%, 0.0%, 0.5 and 0.04%. That is, conversion therapy has a failure rate in excess of 99.5% during each study. Considering the anecdotal data which indicates a large percentage of extremely depressed and suicidal clients emerging from conversion therapy, it would appear that this form of therapy is worthless.

Believe it or not, homosexuality is very natural.

There are hundreds of species of animals that have GLB individuals.

For example: the grizzly bear.

Grizzly females have been known to form life-long bonds with other females.

See also: Penguins.

And no, most gay animals don't go running back looking to reproduce.

They tend to adopt orphans.

Homosexuality Is Natural

arrow Bidstrup.com: The Natural "Crime Against Nature"

Quote:
In species in which this normally occurs in heterosexual couples, that shouldn't come as a great surprise, but it does come as a surprise in species where heterosexual pair-bonds don't normally form for long if at all. This is true of bottlenose dolphins, which are not known to form heterosexual pair bonds, but which do in fact form homosexual pair bonds, including sex, and often lasting for life.

[...]

Homosexual behavior is not only common, but even more common in other species than in humans. While numbers are hard to come by, there are a few that present some interesting patterns. In ostriches, male homosexuality is much more common than bisexuality, but among mule deer, bisexuality is more common than homosexuality. Among our closest living relatives, the bonobo chimpanzees, few if any are either exclusively heterosexual or homosexual. Indeed, all that have been observed are exclusively permanently bisexual.

arrow Salon.com: The Fabulous Kingdom of Gay Animals

Quote:
There are homosexual and bisexual animals, ranging from charismatic megafauna like mountain gorillas to cats, dogs and guinea pigs. There are transgendered animals, transvestite animals (who adopt the behavior of the other gender but don't have sex with their own), and animals who live in bisexual triads and quartets.

Guess what? Marriage is a civil right.

In the US, it grants couples over 1,000 federal rights and benefits.

But this is denied to homosexual couples.

Why? Because the heterosexuals said so.

Many say that GLB should get civil unions, and be "separate" from straights in that regard.

They completely ignore the fact that civil unions do not grant the same rights as marriage.

And forget that "separate but equal" is NEVER equal.

For the Last Time, Marriages Aren't Civil Unions!

arrow Religious Tolerance: Marriage Benefits Denied to Gays

Religious Tolerance
On the order of 1,400 legal rights are conferred upon married couples in the U.S. Typically these are composed of about 400 state benefits and over 1,000 federal benefits.

Religious Tolerance: Civil Unions

Religious Tolerance
However, a civil union is not a marriage. A gay or lesbian couple will still be denied the 1,049 federal "rights, benefits and privileges" that are routinely given to married couples.

User Image

"Should gays be allowed to adopt?"

Duh. Why not?

They're just as capable of being good (or bad) parents as straights are.

They aren't more likely to molest their children.

They can't "influence" their children to be gay.

And they can give a child a home instead of letting him or her bounce around the foster care system.

Learn more about gay adoption.

Gay Adoption Should Be Legal. Period.

arrow APA: Study on Children of Gay Couples

Charlotte J. Patterson
Like families headed by heterosexual parents, lesbian and gay parents and their children are a diverse group (Martin, 1993).

[...]

Lesbian and heterosexual women have not been found to differ markedly either in their overall mental health or in their approaches to child rearing (Kweskin & Cook, 1982; Lyons, 1983; Miller, Jacobsen, & Bigner, 1981; Mucklow & Phelan, 1979; Pagelow, 1980; Rand, Graham, & Rawlings, 1982; Thompson, McCandless, & Strickland, 1971), nor have lesbians' romantic and sexual relationships with other women been found to detract from their ability to care for their children (Pagelow, 1980). Recent evidence suggests that lesbian couples who are parenting together tend to divide household and family labor relatively evenly (Hand, 1991; Patterson, 1995a) and to report satisfaction with their couple relationships (Koepke, Hare, & Moran, 1992; Patterson, 1995a). Research on gay fathers has similarly found no reason to believe them unfit as parents (Barret & Robinson, 1990; Bigner and Bozett, 1990; Bozett, 1980, 1989).

65% (reported cases of harassment) + 57% (unreported cases of harassment) = 122% of homosexuals are harassed?

Good job! That's really interesting and informative, thanks mrgreen . I'm really shocked actually, I had a look at the world map, and where I used to live (United arab emerates, next to saudi arabia in the middle east) homosexuality is punishable by the death penalty! As if. That's completely unreasonable, seeing as I know a few british people who live out there. What are they going to do if they realise they're gay or bi, huh?

Diet Otaku - If I understand correctly, that is saying that 65% of GLBT students report harassment and it's estimated that 57% of all harassment cases go unreported, not that 57% more students are harassed but don't report it.

In reality the statistic for all cases of harassment, reported and unreported, would still be somewhere between 65% and 100%.

Very nice. The banners are gorgeous and clear and concise. Very straight to the point. It's great that you have cold hard facts to support them, because let's face it, you can't ge people to see what you're saying by opinions alone. Superb job.

This is absolutely wonderful. Very well done, very clear and informative. My only request would be that you possibly transcribe what the banners flash through, at least in this profile--they're very pretty, and well done, but it's difficult to get the full effect of them when you have to wait for each one to go back to the beginning, then read through it. Other than that, this is awesome!

Wonderful! *applauds* It's great to find someone that understands that you don't need "experience" to know your sexual orientation, and that being gay is discovered around teenage years. So many people think we're just looking for attention or something... It gives GLBT teens a bad name.

Anyway, brilliant work! 3nodding

Yo tengo solomente una pregunta.
If 57% of the harassment cases go unreported, how do they know about them?
I for one can say that gay harassment doesn't just apply to gays, I get called gay despite the fact that I am straight. In short "Gay" has become the new "comunist"

And that makes it even more tragic, wouldn't you say, that when people are looking for a way to insult someone or put them down, the first thing that comes to mind is "gay" and "lesbian." Homophobia is so bad sometimes that people are afraid to show any kind of physical affection at all towards people of the same gender.

Excellent journal, by the way.
