The Pearl Princess was always more comfortable with clams than other mermaids. She left spending her time swimming through the deep and trading stories with the clams. It after one such day of story trading that a clam opened up to her and gave her, her very first pearl. Since then, she doesn't leave the clams. And she collects all the pearls they can give her.
