"normal" student studying but struggling to keep up with class work and learning subjects. Government started human-animal cloning and genetic manipulation in early 50s behind everyones back they continued after it was judged morally questionable.
Their efforts were however not in vain. At the cost of several thousands of dollars and a few patriot volunteers some of whom died in testing and surgery they began to develop animals with human qualities.
Minds logic most of the animals grew larger more predatory and hostile but also more intelligent.
Mammals were tested insects and even a few fish however insects were the golden children of the experiment.
their rapid life spans and wide variety of traits they received the genetic rewrite the most consistent.

the program however due to budget constraints fell dry on resources and all ongoing projects were to be terminated the subjects who were intelligent enough to see the big picture when other subjects would-be taken to be "finalized" as most of the scientists euphemized would never come back. In one self preserving act retaliated against their long time mentors and caretakers. Many of the subjects escaped in the short lived fight. Furious the chain of command ordered the subjects to be ruthlessly eliminated before the public could find out. However the animals were intelligent if you stood an augmented wolf against one of its peers you would never realize the difference until it revealed itself. the size difference was neglect able to most species save the insects which grew up to thirty six time as large as "normal" size dictated.
