I love my bass. On that subject, I have noticed that if anyone cites a bassist from a band, it is usually one of the same 3. Cliff Burton (R.I.P. - Metallica), Les Claypool (Primus), or Flea (Red Hot Chilli Peppers). These would be 3 of the most over rated bass players known to man!
There are plenty of bass players who don't get as much recognition as they do, who most definately deserve more.
Flea is good at playing funk bass, but with his licks can be a bit repetetive and also somewhat unoriginal. Dennis Pepa (Death Angel) and DD Verni (Overkill) both held some great funk influance on bass, and integrated them well into thrash songs. Unfortunately, not many know of them.
Les Claypool is know for playing amazing things. Yes, Les is good. BUT, he was taught by Stuart Hamm. If you really wish to see some things that you didn't know were possible, give 'Ol Stu a look at.
Cliff Burtan was an acceptional bassist. I really enjoyed his work. Though he has gotten a larger fan base, and worship, only because he died. There are some people who didn't even know his work from Trauma, when he actually played great bass licks. Steve Harris (Iron Maiden), Dave Ellefson (Megadeth), and Markus Grosskopf (Helloween) are prime examples of other amazing, yet often looked over bassists, who, in my opinion, were more skilled than Cliff Burton.
Well, that was my rant for the day. xD
