mermaid form:
Human form:
A mermaid. The creature of fantasy that men would kill to see and women would sell off every thing they owned to resemble them. They are kind creatures, beautiful angels of the ocean that simply sing for the amusement of the sailors that pass by and they are innocent. Liars. Whoever began the nonsense of mermaids being peaceful creatures. The sailors and pirates of the ocean know better. They are vicious creatures that seduce a man from his very boat and into the water. They pull the man to the bottom of the ocean, drowning him before they devour him completely, nothing but bones remain and even those are never found. Mermaids...beautiful creatures with hearts of evil. Though magical they are most certainly. A single tear to heal a wound, a bit of blood added to a drink to give youth, a scale to provide near invincibility. Though of course, the effects are hardly ever permanent. The tears will heal and the wound will stay healed for sure. The blood, though granting youth for the time being, must be consumed regularly for continued effects, and a scale will fade and another must be taken sooner than one would like. And so, mermaids were hunted, drawn out of the open waters and run to shore where they were bagged and drained of all their useful properties. Mermaid tears were bottled, their blood vialed up quickly before the warmth could leave it, their scales plucked one by one and sealed individually, and these items were sold upon the black market. They were not as good as they would have been should they be fresh from a living mermaid, but they sold splendidly well indeed.

A fishing expedition off the coast of some great nation rendered something amazing. The lanterns and fires burning aboard the ship cast bright circles of light into the water and the heavy singing of the crew as they hauled in the catch could be heard from miles around almost. And as the hours ticked by, the boat was surrounded bu beautiful mermaids, having been drawn by the light and the singing. They were goddesses of the water and the sailors gawked as they leaned over the sides of the boat just to catch a piece of the song the mermaids were singing, weaving their magic into reality as the men leaned closer over the edge of the low sitting fishing vessel. The mermaids propped themselves up onto the edge, singing and enticing the men, each taking a hand of a man as they guided them into the water. And then all hell broke loose as a gun was fired into the midst of the mermaids and one was pierced. The screams began and the snarling of the mermaids as they pulled the helpless men into the water once more. It was bloody water in which the rest of the crew hauled up their nests with all speed, hoping to catch a vile creature and sell it for a grand profit. The thrashing the crashing against the deck was heard as the boat hurried away from the scene of the massacre. The heavy thud was followed by hissing and snapping of teeth. The men backed away as the sight was revealed. A mermaid, her beauty undeniable, but her snapping and hissing far too frightening. She laid there upon the deck, tangled in the ropes and netting. "Hurry and put her in some container! We don't want her slipping over the edge!" the captain ordered with a smirk. The mermaid thrashed as hands grabbed her and she was lifted into a large tank of sorts where the live fish supply was stored. The lid was closed securely over her and darkness engulfed her as she was barely covered in the water.

The fishing vessel continued on into port with all haste. They were met however by royal guards of the highest order. "We heard the commotion at sea. Open your fish supply.." the captain of the guard ordered, gun trained at the captain of the ship. What choice did they have in the matter. The lid was lifted off and the mermaid inhaled as she shrank from the appearance of a face above her. The man looked shocked to say the least, but then a greedy grin crossed his face and the lid was replaced for the time being. The captain of the guard turned to the crew. "We thank you gentlemen for this kind gift to our prince. Now then, we'll be delivering her from here on out. Leave." he ordered. The sailors had no real choice in that either as they grumbled and were herded from the ship and onto dry land. "Bring the glass casing!" the man ordered out over his shoulder to his subordinates. Glass cases were routinely made and one was brought along whenever there was perhaps a disturbance at sea, just in the hope that a mermaid would be discovered and taken alive. The large casing was brought and lowered into the water for a moment, filling it just to half before being toted onto the ship and placed onto the ground carefully. Two crew members were brought back from the shore and ordered to fish the creature out and put it into the casing as ordered. The men were reluctant and cursed as the creature sank her teeth into them more than once. Though finally the beauty sank into the water at long last and the lid was slammed shut firmly and locked tightly. There came the shifting as it was lifted and the poor woman was hauled from the ship and onto the first dry land that she had ever come upon.

Her name was Arabeth and though she had tried to fight off her captors, nets and the fear of the guns had frightened her. She had become entangled and imprisoned and now, with every step from the sea, she could feel herself in increasing pain. The land..it was so strange and she could slowly feel her air leaving her as she remained stoic, turned on her side and facing out the side of the glass casing tiredly. Mermaids did not cry for their tears were too important...never. Not even now as she could feel her body screaming for the air that was not there for her to have. She watched as the ground changed and at last they reached a massive home. It was dark and silent, the wet footsteps from the guards the only things that she could make out through her casing. The water sloshed around as they stopped and she was put down onto the floor.

"The prince has been woken little dearie..We'll see how much you're worth in a moment." the guard muttered to her through the casing, hitting the glass sharply with his finger. She shifted away, baring her teeth at the sound. And then, the world was alight and her eyes landed on a man that seemed to command respect wherever he went and he looked as though he were born of some great royalty, and he was handsome, even if he was dressed for sleep. Her eyes shifted and met his through the glass. She was sure that her own were glazing over as she slipped closer to unconsciousness. Perhaps this was what she had been waiting for...death. "Your majesty, we confiscated a mermaid here from a fishing vessel that just docked. We brought her to you immediately." the captain continued on as if he had done some great deed and was proud of himself as he tapped the lock on the side of the case as if to prove a point. Her eyes were soft as she stared at this prince, nearly begging for air.
