It seems he ( like in Twilight with Jacob and Nessie) has imprinted on her (code for love at first sight). She is in the hospital because her heart needs to be replaced due to a hole in it. The only reason why she's survived so long is because of her mutant power. She can draw energy from anywhere in her body to another part of her body that needed (hence her legs). He came right after her surgery and while she was healing he fell in love. The army commandos found out and came to destroy them both but Draken and her escaped into the war zone. There they were separated. Her to the team protecting the space station, him helping a group of mutants from being press-ganged into the bad mutants' army.
