TV Show Recommendation: Pushing Daisies

It is very seldom that a show makes me say "wow" in a good way...but WOW! (in a VERY good way). I've got to say, I love everything about this show. Let's get the basics out of the way so we can talk about these loveable things.

Wikipedia say: "Pushing Daisies centers on the life of Ned, a pie-maker gifted with the mysterious ability to bring dead things back to life by touching them. There are some conditions to this somewhat unusual talent. Ned quickly learns that if something is revived for more than exactly one minute, something of similar "life value" in the vicinity drops dead, as a form of balance. Additionally, if he touches the revived person or thing a second time, it falls dead again, this time permanently."

The show is something like a murder mystery-drama-fantasy-romance all wrapped up in one sweet, linear package and wrapped very well indeed.

What really attracted me to this show was the intricacy of the plot. All of the elements work together to bring the end to a close. Everything is used. Nothing is forgotten. Even characters you think you will only see once sometimes pop up again later.

One of the things I really love about Pushing Daisies is that everything is top notch, and what is done is done well. The writing is simply incredible. So much is packed into so little and even short conversations or statements are amazingly witty. All of the actors are brilliant (and very pretty to look at), the characters are fleshed out incredibly well, the music is absolutely fantastic (I really want the soundtrack!), and even the costumes and color schemes are a treat for the eye. Even the cinematography is very...well...cinematic! I felt like I was watching a movie rather than a show. The world of Pushing Daisies is pleasantly wonky, reminding me of Tim Burton's films or Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events.

Every episode is very unique and has it's own theme or style. You can really tell that the staff went all out to make every episode special, from the sets to the music to the angles at which the scene is recorded. Everything has a place.

My only complaint is that this wonderful show is coming to an end. After the second season aired, ratings declined, and as a result, Pushing Daisies has been canceled.
If you can deal with the loss, please give this series a try. It may not be for everyone, but maybe that's what makes it so special.

Five stars, all the way.
