Alright, so, in my history class, we got into this huge debate about Hitler and such. Now, during the discussion, one guy in my class spoke up during the discussion. Normally, I'm able to tolerate other people's opinions, but this time, it kinda ticked me off.
He started saying things about how Hitler's idea had been good. At first, we thought he meant by uniting all the nations under one rule. If it had been that, it wouldn't have bothered me that much. I wouldn't have held the same opinion, but I wouldn't have really cared.
However, when the teacher asked him if that was what he'd meant, he said no; that his whole take over the world with a 'superior race' had been a good idea. Basically, he was saying that everyone should be exactly the same.
Now, I don't support Hitler in any way, shape, or form, but I also don't think he was a stupid man. You'd have to possess some form of a brain to get an entire nation to follow you. However, here's the big question I have to ask.
What part of eliminating every single minority is a good idea? How do you justify doing causing something as horrific as the holocaust? Maybe I'm only looking at it from my point of view, but killing millions of people sounds wrong to be. And when I say the holocaust, I don't just mean the Jewish people he put a genocide over; I'm talking ALL the people he killed. Yes, the Jewish population suffered the biggest blow, but other people were affected too; Roma; Soviet civilians, Soviet prisoners of war; ethnic Poles; the disabled; homosexual men; and political and religious opponents. How can you justify killing all those people?
He also said something about how every race thinks themselves superior. I will admit, there are always racist people, and those people exist in every race. However, not every person struts around saying how much better their race is compared to everyone else; not everyone tries to do a genocide on an entire population either.
Basically, when this debate ended, the entire class, including myself, was pissed at him, not that it's a big surprise. I don't really think you can bring something like that up in a classroom and not get your head bitten off.
