"Are you alright?"
Claire jumped at the sudden intrusion of her thoughts. Turning around, she found Jake stood behind her and smiled shakily. "Ye...yes. Of course. He was only trying to scare me."
Reaching out, he gently placed his hand upon her shoulder, trying to offer her some comfort. He could feel her quivering under his touch, like a frightened deer; Lewis had succeeded, even if she wouldn't admit it.
About to speak, Claire interrupted him with a brittle smile. "Come on. Susan and Felix are waiting for us." They were watching them with worry on their faces. She attempted to stroll back to the table, as if nothing was wrong, but was too fast to be nonchalant; Lewis' appearance had rattled her.
Jake frowned at her retreating back. Why had Lewis come back? He had been happy, Claire had been happy, for the first time in ages. It was spoiled now, by his mere presence. What was he up to?
With a sigh, Jake gave up his worried brooding, returning to sit beside Claire. They'd find out soon enough.
