Yup, the vacation wound down a bit early, and I'm back home after a week of absence. I got a LOT of reading done in my spare time. I read all of the Iliad and half of the Aeneid. (I'm really big into the classics.) After that I'm going to treat myself to some Oscar Wilde. I told dad that I want to start getting in shape. I've gotten a bit pudgy and I want to fix it before it gets out of hand.
I went out to the see the chickens unusually early. I just couldn't wait to see them! There was no sign of the fox, but I'm still on alert. I'm planning on putting some tight wire mesh around the bottom of the fence.
The chickens didn't seem to mind that I was gone, or if they did, they didn't show it, which was disappointing. The turkens are finally laying. Milt is doing OK with the big birds, but I'm still thinking of finding a new home for him. It's just not fair to allow him to be picked on all the time.
The chickens may not have cared very much, but Jenny the turkey sure did! As soon as I entered the turkey pen, she did the same pose Gilly does when she wants to be picked up. It really took me by surprise, since Jenny usually isn't very friendly, but this time she enjoyed being smothered in love. I picked her up, set her on my lap, and started kissing and baby-talking to her. She really looked like she enjoyed it. She was so calm I was worried for a second that she might be sick. So I put her in the coop so she could get some fresh water if she wanted it, and I went over to Gilly. She's still sitting in her grass nest. There were nearly a dozen eggs under her. She was too bust being broody to notice me, which made me sad, but then Jenny came running over and plopped down by my side. I hope she stays this sweet. I guess I really worried her when I left.
..In sadder news, my oldest cat, Casper, passed away. He was nearly fourteen. He died right before the trip one week ago, but hid himself under the shed. Our wonderful neighbors, who were looking after the house for us, buried him. Casper was named because when we got him, I was enamored with the movie Casper the Friendly Ghost, which had just come out. He lived up to his name and was the friendliest and most loving and understanding cat I have ever known. He was a classic tabby. Casper was an outdoor cat, and an excellent hunter. Almost a month after he got him, he nearly killed a rabbit that was almost as big as he was. He delighted in bringing us little "presents," whether they be dead or alive. When we brought new animals in the house, whether it be another cat or a dog, he'd try to teach them to hunt by bringing in live chipmunks. When we brought Toby, my other cat, home, they hit it off from the start. They were dear friends. Whenever you petted Casper for a length of time, he'd start drooling. He was a dear friend who will be sorely missed.
