2. A Sudden Change
“No, my car is in the shop!” Joanna replied to her mother as she stepped through the large mahogany front door, “I will just walk to work today.” She yawned before closing the wooden blockade behind her. The sun shone brightly and caused her brown hair to sparkle like copper. Stepping lightly, the young woman continued on her trek down the side walk a ways before gingerly placing a foot onto the street. Just then, a red Aztec, (which is a car), veered around the corner and drove at an alarming speed towards Joanna. The sun glinted off its windshield and blinded her as she realized her plight and screamed loudly, trying to dodge. ‘Is this the end? Am I going to die? …’ Thoughts streamed through her mind as the Aztec honked at her and the driver raved inside.
Doppel was watching the sight when he realized he knew the girl from an earlier event. Disregarding his better judgment, He swooped down from a roof and caught the woman, pulling her out of harms way. Dumbstruck, Joanna leaned against him breathing harshly. “Are you alright ma’am?” Doppel asked while realizing his mistake. “Oh good God… Forgive me for this!” He shouted while holding her closely. He could feel God’s judging gaze upon him, and was quite afraid of the consequences to his actions.
Still too shocked for words, the lady watched breathlessly as the crazed driver drove off in relieved confusion. Continuing his sorrowful worrying, Dopple whined a bit more while carrying Joanna off to wherever he made his home. Sadly, young Joanna had no idea what was going on as the handsome and debonair man held her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.
After a few moments of bumping along in his arms, Joanna recovered enough to open her, heart shaped red lipped, mouth. “Where… where did you come from?” She screeched loudly as his form suddenly began to morph into that of a lanky blond rock star she was quite knowledgeable about. Finally removing himself from the cloud of conflict about his head, he looked back at her and frowned.
“The sky. How else would I have gotten there so fast?” He replied with his own question which resulted in confusing her even more, “Oh… the sky, I should have guessed. … YOU’RE CRAZY!” Shouting directly into his ear, Joanna raved at the young man, “Hm, you seem distraught.” He smiled at her with a trace of a snicker in his voice, “Well let me see, I almost got hit by a car, and a smart-alecky rock star just swooped in from the sky and is carrying me away! OF COURSE I’M DISTRAUGHT!” Screamed the, now very angry, woman while flailing her arms and legs, “Let me go!” Continuing her tirade on Doppel’s actions, Joanna soon grew hoarse and was forced to be silent as he trekked through the streets and past myriads of sweating, ignorant people.
Something was strange, Jo thought as she watched the other humans. ‘Why aren’t they stopping him? Or even looking at us?’ With this thought, she opened her mouth once again and screamed loudly. Queerly peering back at her, Doppel flicked her nose.
“It will never work my dear. We are currently detached from the human existence. They cannot see or hear you. To them, you are silent and invisible.” Finished with his explanation, his form began to phase through hers and morph into a taller and tanner frame. “Oh yes,” He responded to the horrified glint coming from the greens of her eyes, “I am Doppelganger… the angel of death…”
Suddenly, things began to make sense to the frail looking young lady. It was all just a dream…. Otherwise, this ‘angel’ would never have chosen her. It was an impossible thought, for she had absolutely nothing to offer him in any way of thanks. Whether angel or human, a being does something to get something in return. Or so she thought….
Doppel did want something, but it was not a simple desire, or even one he knew of yet. Deeply hidden within him, his heart was moving at a quicker pace than he could catch. Not needing to breath, he was quite silent as he continued to heft Joanna. Short and curled locks of dark brown hair loomed above his brow and flitted to a ‘v’ point on his neck. His eyes were the color of freshly cut and polished emeralds as they glinted on a sunny day from within a window case.
Seeing that she had calmed down considerably, Doppel let her down gently and took her arm in his. “Now now, be a good girl and learn to enjoy your new…. Life!” Laughing at the irony of his statement, the cool earthy color of his skin rippled into a rosy shade around the cheeks; causing the blood to rush into Joanna’s as well. This was definitely a dream….
****
Waking up in his arms once again, she groggily rubbed her eyes as he pushed a door open and laid her on a gray, bed like fixture. The walls looked fuzzy and out of focus to Joanna as her eyes lolled in their sockets. Spacious and uninviting, Doppel’s house was quite horrifying as it ebbed and bubbled like fresh tar left out in the sun on a summers day in the south. Lovely globs of gray goop pulled of the ceiling using our dear friend gravity as a helper in its devious plot to land on Doppel’s head. It missed, and flopped onto the brown shag carpet beneath him.
“Hmm… I forgot how disgustingly odd looking I left this place!” Smirking, he flicked his fingers and a long mettle cylinder with a curved blade atop it appeared in his hand. Pushing down on a section of the mettle, a numbered panel popped out and he entered a code, causing a bright light to emit from the tip of its blade and transform the house. Surrounded by pooling crimson swirls of color, Doppel spun around dramatically and sunk into a, newly created, black leather easy chair.
Joanna’s mind could not yet believe the images floating through her eyes as Doppel continued to deplete her sanity. Staring blankly at him, she watched amazed as his skin and other features continued to phase in and out of existence. One moment he was a beast, the next a human; continuing on from that came unimaginable horrors seeming to rise straight from the bowels of Hell. Drool began to slip in pools from her mouth onto the, now crimson colored, bed which she laid on in her paralysis. Everything faded from her eyes and she once again fell into the sweet blissfulness of sleep.
