Well, not particularly. But here's a pseudoscientific rant I initially made in the forums in response to someone else's post, mentioning the perils of fandom. It is edited for size and ease of reading. Be warned, there be fake maths and geekery ahead!


Oh, no, it's not an opinion - that's a scientific fact. A fact that I can equate in a mathematic formula.

Q=f(i/o)

The quality of the Fandom is equal to the amount of fans multiplied by the overall score for the average intelligence divided by the average obsession of said fans.

(The quality of the Fandom is determined by how many fans there are, and their intelligence-to-obsession ratio. The higher the intelligence and lower the obsession, and the higher number of fans a series has, the higher quality it is.)

Elaboration

The higher number of fans is important because... well, obviously if the series was s**t, not many people would like it, so it obviously must attract them for some reason. Which brings up the next two areas to balance this out.

The intelligence can be measured by one's actions, articulation (typing and speech issues), and overall ability to differentiate fantasy from reality.

This obsession can be measured by the screams of fangirls and the debates/cosplay/conlang speaking for either gender.

Examples

Debate between Sith vs. Jedi = moderate obsession, high intelligence (philosophical argument).

Debate over Kirk vs. Picard = high obsession, low intelligence (character worship).

Speaking a conlang found in a series = high obsession, high intelligence (must be involved enough to care, must be intelligent enough to remember what words mean what thing). It should be noted, however, that the intelligence may changed depending on the beauty of the language, the hotness of the race or culture who speaks it, and the extent to which the fans who speak it take on that culture's appearance. Huttese is hilariously adorable, though the Hutts are ugly, but fans do not often cosplay as Hutts (or really even speak the language), so it is moderately harmless. Elvish is a very beautiful language, and given that many Elves are hot, it comes off very well, if not for the upsetting amount of fans who wear Elf-ears. Klingon is an ugly language from ugly creatures, spoken by ugly nerds in ugly Klingon makeup, therefore it is destructive to its Fandom.

Throwing rocks at, or sending hate mail to, actors who portrayed characters = high obsession, low intelligence

Jedi cosplay = high obsession, moderate intelligence (geeky need to be in-universe, but understanding of the adaptability of Jedi clothing depending on weather).

Fat woman as Sexy no Jutsu = high obsession, low intelligence (geeky need to be in-universe, poor understanding of the word sexy).

Manfaye = Meter's broken. Eyes bleeding. Error. Error. Error.

Random Note

I just realized I never even considered the factors of movie and television adaptations or spinoffs based upon the material - or novel adaptation/spinoffs, if the series did not begin there in the first place. Though this may go into the quality of the series itself, unless you take into effect the reaction of the fans toward the adaptations/spinoffs relative to the quality of said adaptations/spinoffs.

Remember, if there's a sucky movie adaptation that the fans love, it's a bad mark on the fandom, as is a good movie that the fans hate. That and all other factors must be dealt with by amount of INTENSITY, which will inevitably fall under "Obsession." The angry or joyous rants will inevitably determine intelligence from there.
