…The first in a series of very bad mistakes with lasting consequences. This was the beginning of my personal nightmare… and it was mostly my own fault.

The boyo I was distracting got pushy, so I pushed back and we ended up in a two person, knock down, drag out wrestling match… which I lost. Now that I think of it that was pretty unusual for me. I’m normally pretty hard to offend. Could be I was nudged… heh, yeah that’d figure.

Man he was fast, unnaturally so… but I will think I would’ve held my own if I hadn’t cracked my head on the Gatepost.

Next thing I knew he had me pinned on my belly with my arms pinned under his knees. After I’d finished seeing stars I was just about to hunch myself over and work on getting him off of me. If there’s one thing I am it’s hard to pin and keep pinned. About then Sandie came rushing over and Gate boy got off me quick and bowed.

I looked at him sideways for a moment, raised my eyebrows and them gave him a pleasant smile and chopped him, sword fist style, in the cheek. I know better than to punch on the nose, chin or forehead… after all, the head is harder than the fist... or at least mine. He winced and rubbed his face gently. “Sometime, Gate Ganger,” I told him, “I want a re-match. Some place where there are no handy Gate posts for you to crack my head against!” Then I hurried to catch up with Sandie, who’d left completely embarrassed. “So, how’d it go?” I asked her. She wouldn’t tell me. I wonder why?



After that I avoided that Gate Guard I’d fought (his name was Gerome) as much as possible. Oddly enough, for about a month after, he wouldn’t leave me alone. Maybe he wanted to set up a date for our rematch. I was also quite gratified to notice his face had bruised nicely… it almost made the lump from the Gatepost and the stiffness I had the next day worth it. I’d promised Sandie though, not to embarrass her… or myself any further though and the brief brush I’d had with Gate Gangers (I was one of the few who dared call them by this slang term. As a group they inspired fear and awe and in me animosity and disgust. Not only did they creep me right out, they also got on my nerves.) So, I picked up my standard behavior toward them once more… that is, to keep right out of their way. Only, it seemed that wasn’t an option anymore. Gerome had noticed me and that placed me on the desirable list for others. As expert as they become at hunting me down, I’d become just as expert at avoiding them… This also meant avoiding him. This was not in my plan, as I’d’ve liked my rematch.

Unfortunately, anytime I tried to get near him or he near me we got interfered with. I noticed it wasn’t so much his Gate Gang buddies as the Gate Ganger wannabe’s. With the Gate Ganger group they all seemed to be leaving me respectfully alone. Gah, man those gits were driving me crazy! All I wanted to do was met with the guy and apologize for thumping him in the face… which even I admit was a low blow… It’s just, I HATE smug and he was practically radiating it. I also wanted my rematch. I might get beaten again but it’d be interesting to see who won a fair fight.

A month or two after I popped him one, he suddenly seemed to lose interest, or at least stopped trying to speak with me. I was a little disappointed; my sense of fair play kept bugging me. I’d done the guy a bad turn bopping him like that and I wanted to apologize for that at least, though not for the reason that had started the fight. (He’d made a disparaging remark about Sandie. I’ll be the first to admit she’s no beauty queen but he didn’t have to say that.)
