Back in the day when gaiaonline was called go-gaia.com, there was a place for people to meet in an anonymous way. This place in gaia was called "personals" and you can see the old building in barton, where the sign "love" is on top.
There you could write a message describing what you were looking for, and people would reply. I made plenty of friends there, including the famous (or was famous back then) Jowy Atreides: the owner of gaia's first geisha tea shop and frequent costumer of the coffee shop by Ninina.
Personals had a bad reputation of being filled with underage sex proposals, sm groups, master-slave rps and generally out of control. It was not 100% made of that, but there was a high rate of abuse from its users.
The staff of gaiaonline took it out with the promise that it would be back once they had figured out a safer way to run the service, but that promise seems now to have been just an excuse to take it out without protests.
Years later, it would be replaced by the friends forum in the chatterbox.
I still miss personals, though.
